Donald Trump shared a tweet of one of his supporters shouting ‘white power’ – then went golfing without his phone, sending aides into a panic (Pictures: Twitter/AFP) Donald Trump’s frantic aides couldn’t get hold of him to tell him to delete a tweet of his supporters crying ‘White power’ because he was out golfing. The president took three hours to remove the clip showing a male and female supporter riding a golf cart through The Villages in Florida and shouting the white supremacist slogan at anti-Trump protesters. NBC News reported that the tweet sparked a ‘five alarm fire’ among top Trump staffers – and that they couldn’t reach him to get him to delete it because he’d put his phone down for three hours to enjoy a round of golf at his Virginia course. The president’s communications team – including White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany – are said to have tried to reach Trump’s Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino to ask him to remove the post, but were unable to do so. And the pressure was further increased after one of Trump’s fellow Republicans, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, appeared on CNN before it was deleted to brand the message ‘indefensible.’ Scott is the only black senator in the US. TRUMPS “WHITE POWER” Tweet this morning He just deleted it. LET ME REPEAT… the PRESIDENT OF THE USA JUST TWEETED “Thank you to the great people of The Villages” of this guy yelling “WHITE POWER!”. Disgusting!pic.twitter.com/KQPHPYhnWu — AMERICAN VALUES (@AMERICANVALUE12) June 28, 2020 The offensive message was finally deleted when Trump aides managed to get hold of him, with McEnany telling reporters Monday that the president hadn’t noticed its racist message. In March, Trump told journalists he ‘noticed everything’ he shared on Twitter after being asked about another retweet which included a call to fire White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci over the coronavirus crisis. Trump reportedly spent three hours enjoying his Virginia golf course on Sunday, before his staff finally contacted him and asked him to delete the tweet (Picture: AFP) ABC News reported that the clip was shot around June 14. President Trump shared it and added his own caption, which said: ‘Thank you to the great people of The Villages.’ It sparked widespread fury amidst ongoing Black Lives Matter protests, with Sherrilyn Ifill from anti-racism group the NAACP among those condemning it. She told CBS: ‘This is really not about the president taking it down. ‘This is about the judgment of the president in putting it up. It’s about what the president believes. And it’s time for this country to really face that.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk For more stories like this, check our news page
