This Weak in Politics, Vol. 232 May 7, 2020 This week has proven to be an all-you-can-eat buffet of crazy. Once again making the writing of satire a difficult task. This week alone we learned that the hero of this pandemic may not be Anthony Fauci… it may be a Belgian llama who is currently in a secret hideaway, our defiantly maskless president gave his most thorough analysis to date — not about COVID-19, about the ratings of different late show hosts, a swarm of mandibled creatures called murder hornets moved in to the country while we were binge watching Rockford Files reruns (having already binged through the previous 4 decades of shows already, RBG was briefly hospitalized, and the US Secretary of the Treasury was in a Tweet fight with Axl Rose over whether or not the secretary is an asshole. Spoiler alert: he is. As for the pandemic, President Trump continues to stumble his way through what we like to call his Katrona (Making his VP Mike “heckuva job, brown nose” Pence (sp?). This week, Trump actually followed in Pence’s footsteps by pretending he didn’t know masks were supposed to be worn in public, all the while telling the American people they ought to, you know… where masks in public. The president feels that wearing a mask would not be a good luck for him. In fairness, he has a point. You certainly wouldn’t want to put a mask on whatever the hell this image is portraying. His leadership on the mask issue continues a proud tradition of American presidents setting the town for the people. https://ift.tt/2WeFEr8 The president has decided that, when it comes to the coronavirus, his “work” here is done. Among the steps he is taking to get things back to normal is, he is upping the corruption of his Department of Justice, encouraging armed insurrection, and disbanding his coronavirus task force. Without the coronavirus task force, the American people are going to have to go back to Fox News to get their misinformation. And, as though this period of time hasn’t already exposed us to the myriad things that are broken in our nation, two stories this week added an exclamation point… in black and white. First, some background… remember back in April, a doctor was handcuffed for no reason? Well, keeping that story in mind, here are two new ones: the Department of Justice today dropped the prosecution against a man who pled guilty twice, and in Georgia an unarmed man was shot… the scene captured on video… and no arrests have been made despite the fact the authorities know the two who pulled the trigger. So, here’s a test — see if you can identify which of the three men below is the one who had charges dropped despite his guilty pleas, which one was handcuffed for no apparent reason, and which one fatally shot an unarmed man and is still a free man: Now, to be fair to the police, the doctor in question was wearing a mask and, doing awful things like delivering tents to the homeless between shifts of testing them for COVID-19. If the good doc didn’t want to get handcuffed, he shouldn’t have been doing that. African Americans need to learn from white people how to handle situations with authorities. https://ift.tt/3fy1ldh With all of the horrible things happening around the country, Trump took decisive action today and… declared a National Day of Prayer. Again. He did the same thing back on March 15th. Based on the remarkable success of that effort (there have only been 1,253,026 new coronavirus cases and 75,740 new deaths since the last round of prayer) the president figured it was time for all of us (not just Mike Pence (sp?) to get on our knees. You cynics might suggest the days o’ prayer might have something to do with shoring up Trump’s base, but we think it is purely a coincidence that when he needs evangelicals, he prays more than a mantodea, ormantis religiosa, if you know what we mean. If you don’t, here’s a clue. Ok, that was awful. We should never have exposed you to something so grotesque and frightening. We have been through enough. Here is something different to haunt your dreams… err focus on. In addition to upping his prayer game — or at least the illusion of a prayer game, the president is also beginning to do more events in locations and environments that lend themselves to campaign ads. Again, coincidence we are sure. Most notably, he’s had the Blue Angels fly over various American cities, and lo and behold, almost immediately, the footage found its way into Trump ads. He also did an “interview” with Fox “News” this week at the foot (literally and figuratively) of Abe Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial. Coincidental ad fodder. He has even stepped out of his comfort zone by granting an interview to ABC News. While you may think that setting wasn’t tailor made to also serve as an opportunity for ads, we beg to differ. And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where… holy shit… the shooters in Georgia have been arrested. On the National Day of Prayer, part 2. Coincidence?
