The President was seething when he realised what Twitter had done (Picture: Reuters/EPA/Getty Images) Donald Trump was raging this morning as he woke up to find Twitter had hidden one of his tweets which they say glorifies violence. The message is still available to the public but users have to click a ‘view’ icon and it cannot be replied to or liked. Voicing his anger today, the US President tweeted: ‘Twitter is doing nothing about all of the lies & propaganda being put out by China or the Radical Left Democrat Party. They have targeted Republicans, Conservatives & the President of the United States. Section 230 should be revoked by Congress. Until then, it will be regulated!’ At around 1am in the morning the President weighed in on ongoing rioting in cities across America over the death of unarmed and handcuffed black man George Floyd in police custody. Trump tweeted: ‘These THUGS are dishonouring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!’ Trump has already threatened to ‘shut down social media networks’ after Twitter began fact checking one of his tweets Protesters stand outside the Minneapolis police 3rd Precinct building after it was set alight last night (Picture: AP) Demonstrations are being held in cities across the US following the death of George Floyd (Picture: Getty Images) The remark is now covered up with a message from Twitter saying: ‘This tweet violated the Twitter rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the tweet to remain accessible.’ In a statement via a thread, the platform wrote: ‘We have placed a public interest notice on this tweet from Donald Trump. ‘This tweet violates our policies regarding the glorification of violence based on the historical context of the last line, its connection to violence, and the risk it could inspire similar actions today. ‘We’ve taken action in the interest of preventing others from being inspired to commit violent acts, but have kept the tweet on Twitter because it is important that the public still be able to see the tweet given its relevance to ongoing matters of public importance. Trump is accused of glorifying violence by saying: ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts’ (Picture: REX) Rioters have been starting fires, looting stores and vandalising public property as anger mounts over the deaths of African Americans at the hands of police (Picture: EPA) Twitter have allowed the message to be viewed due to public interest (Picture: Twitter) ‘As is standard with this notice, engagements with the tweet will be limited. People will be able to retweet with comment, but will not be able to like, reply or retweet it.’ Just this week Mr Trump threatened to ‘shut down social media networks’ after Twitter began automatically fact-checking the contents of his tweets. On Wednesday he tweeted: ‘Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016.’ More to follow. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
