This Weak in Politics, Vol. 233 May 14, 2020 This week has been all about the doctors. Dr. Fauci, Dr. Redfield, Dr. Birx, Dr. Bright, and the commander in chief himself, Dr. Didlittle. Drs. Fauci and Redfield are in self-imposed quarantine because a) they may have been exposed to an infected person, and b) they have definitely been exposed to President Trump. Dr. Birx has been in the news because a) she is missing, and b) after pressuring the CDC to lower their death count, she is afraid of being seen in public without her dignity. Dr. Bright — which could easily be an ironic nickname for the president — was in the news because he defied the administration by acting professionally, and last but not least, that brings us to Dr. Donald J. Didlittle. The United States has more cases than any nation in the world — in fact, it has more case than the next 5 countries combined. We have also suffered 1/3 of the world’s death from COVID-19, yet it is President Didlittle, unique in the world, who is bragging about his success. It is reminiscent of George W. Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” debacle aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Or, it would be, if Bush had crashed the plane into the ship, causing it to burst into flames and sink, but releasing a highly contagious virus before doing so. Unbowed by reality, the president continues to brag about things like the speed with which he banned people from traveling here from China save for the tens of thousands of people who traveled here from China. He also brags about the speed with which an auto parts manufacturer produced ventilators, and how quickly the My Pillow guy (no, not Mike Pence [sp?]) pivoted to making masks for the president and his advisors to not wear. So, while he hasn’t done much — certainly not much that has worked — at least he’s stopped touting dangerous, untested, unapproved drugs to the masses. Sure, the drug was dangerous and ineffective, but we have 29 million doses of it! Maybe we can give them to the kids who are returning to schools prematurely, or to old folks at nursing homes because, you know… fuck ‘em. Just how dangerous and ill-advised is the use of hydroxychloroquine? So dangerous that Florida man said “Hey… we’ll use it!” All that said, Trump continues to be a master of deflection. While the US has seen 1,416,528 cases of COVID-19, 85,813 deaths, and 36 million people unemployed, Trump has stayed focused like a laser beam on the most important issue facing the nation. Obamagate. Now before you ask what Obamagate is, and what exactly it is that Obama did wrong, the president has already answered that. https://ift.tt/3dNpDOK In case you missed it — here is the transcript: Mr. President you’ve accused President Obama of committing the biggest political crime in American history by far, what exactly is the crime? “Obamagate. It’s been going on for a long time. It’s been going on before I even got elected and it’s a disgrace that it happened. And if you look at what’s gone on and if you look at now all of this information that’s being released… and from what I understand it’s only the beginning. Some terrible things happened and it should never be allowed to happen on (sic) our country again. You’ll be seeing what’s going on over the next, over the coming weeks, but I… and I wish you’d write honestly about it but unfortunately you choose not to do so.” What is the crime, exactly, that you’re accusing him of? You know what the crime is. The crime is very obvious to everybody. All you have to do is read the newspapers. Except yours.” In other words, the crime is that “80,000 people are dead so I need to accuse a colored of something.” Near as we can tell, this is the real Obamagate: Truth is, Trump is obsessed… infatuated even, and not in a good way, with Obama. He is constantly thinking about him. Makes you wonder if he thinks of Obama when he is having sex. Or better still, when he is with Melania. Finally, speaking of sex, it is beginning to look like Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina might be screwed. Poor Richard is only worth around $7m, so when the opportunity arose to cash in on the greatest pandemic in over a century, he really had no choice but to make a couple of phone calls. A couple of phone calls the FBI is now interested in. (Have no fear — this is not isolated to just Burr. We won’t name names, but we promise, with the FBI involved, no one will be loefft out.) Burr claims his position as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee was not the source of his insights — that he relied on what he learned on cable news. The FBI, however, was able to get a warrant, which suggests they have reason to believe a crime may have been committed, though proving this may be a difficult task. It really comes down to what is effectively a legal duel. We won’t make definite predictions about the outcome, but if you’re going to err on the side of whom might win a duel, err on Burr. Didn’t like that? Give us a break! We hawkin’ a publication over here. And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where a man who voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act over 20 times, can say this with a straight face. https://ift.tt/2Z1PeiZ If you enjoy reading TWITPOL please seek help.
