Donald Trump denied stoking racial tensions as he left the White House Saturday, amid ongoing protests in US cities including Minneapolis, right (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has denied stoking ongoing race riots and declared that his MAGA fans ‘love the black people.’ The President of the United States refuted claims he was worsening unrest over the death of unarmed black man George Floyd across the US with his latest tweets as he left the White House Saturday, saying: ‘No no not at all. ‘MAGA says “Make America Great Again. These are people who love our country. I have no idea if they’re going to be here. I was just asking, but I have no idea if they’re going to be here. MAGA is “Make America Great Again”. By the way, they love African American people. They love black people. MAGA loves the black people.’ Trump was speaking about a series of tweets he sent earlier Saturday, one of which read: ‘The professionally managed so-called “protesters” at the White House had little to do with the memory of George Floyd. ‘They were just there to cause trouble. The @SecretService handled them easily. Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???’ The tweet was interpreted by many as a call for Trump supporters to show up at the White House on Saturday. That sparked fears of clashes with Black Lives Matter activists, who protested outside the White House Friday night over the death of security guard Floyd, 46, who was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis Monday. Question: With your tweet today, are you concerned that you may be stoking more racial violence? Trump: No not at all… I have no idea if theyâre going to be here. By the way, they love African Americans, they love black people. But they love our country…MAGA loves our country.’ The president did not offer further explanation on who he was referring to as ‘MAGA.’ Many Trump supporters wear red caps or other clothing emblazoned with his slogan Make America Great Again. The hats have also been adopted by far-right extremist and white supremacist groups, although Trump has repeatedly touted his own popularity among black and ethic minority voters. He spoke as he prepared to head to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday to see the first manned rocket take off from the United States for more than a decade. The SpaceX launch had been due to take place Thursday, but was canceled because of bad weather. Trump has been accused of stoking tensions which have seen protests, rioting and looting across American cities in the wake of Floyd’s death on Monday. In the early hours of Friday, Trump tweeted that the protesters were ‘THUGS,’ adding ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts’. But at a press conference later that evening he insisted his words had only been meant as a public safety message, rather than a threat. Fired Minneapolis Police Department cop Derek Chauvin was charged with Floyd’s murder yesterday.
