Donald Trump is fully behind UFC 249 going ahead (Picture: AP) US President Donald Trump sent a congratulatory message to Dana White at the start of UFC 249 for putting the show on as he declared: ‘We love it, we think it’s important.’ Trump and White have been friends for years and the US president has supported the UFC president’s efforts to get his organisation back up and running amid the coronavirus crisis. A video message from Trump was shown at the start of the broadcast in Jacksonville, Florida, during which he, slightly bizarrely, praised the social distancing on show in the fights, ‘I’m standing in a very important spot, right outside the Oval Office and you’re looking at the White House behind me,’ said Trump. ‘It’s an honour to be here and it’s an honour to salute you and I want to congratulate Dana White and the UFC, they’re going to have a big match. ‘We love it, we think it’s important. Get the sports leagues back, let’s play. Dana White and Donald Trump have a friendship which dates back many years (Picture: Getty Images) ‘You do the social distancing and whatever you have to do, but we need sports, we want our sports back. ‘Congratulations to Dana White and the UFC.’ White had previously confirmed that Trump will be watching the event. headlined by Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje, as he looks to see how other sports can be brought back into live action. ‘His whole philosophy was let’s get sports back first, figure out how to do that safely,’ said White. ‘Then let’s start figuring out how do you get people back in the office? How do you get people in cubicles?
