Former President Barack Obama has slammed his successor Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis (Pictures: AP) Former President Barack Obama has blasted successor Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis as a ‘chaotic disaster.’ Speaking to former members of his administration, the 44th President of the United States said: ‘What we’re fighting against is these long-term trends in which being selfish, being tribal, being divided, and seeing others as an enemy — that has become a stronger impulse in American life. ‘And by the way, we’re seeing that internationally as well. It’s part of the reason why the response to this global crisis has been so anemic and spotty. It would have been bad even with the best of governments. It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset — of “what’s in it for me” and “to heck with everybody else” — when that mindset is operationalized in our government.’ Obama’s comments were leaked to Yahoo News, and are among the sharpest criticisms he has made of the current president since leaving the White House in January 2017. During the same remarks, Obama vowed to ‘campaign as hard as I can’ for his former Vice President Joe Biden, who is widely-expected to run against President Trump in the November 2020 presidential election. President Trump has been condemned for his slowness to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, with 1.3million confirmed cases across the United States and more than 78,000 deaths. He was told by officials about the threat it presented, but downplayed the potential seriousness of the virus throughout February, and only began ordering lockdown measures in March. Obama’s leaked call also saw him shared how perturbed he’d been by the US Justice Department’s decision to drop charges against Trump’s former national security advisor Michael Flynn for lying. On Thursday a federal judge said charges of lying to the FBI brought against Flynn by former special counsel Robert Mueller should be dismissed, despite Flynn initially admitting to lying, before withdrawing his plea. The judge said the FBI had overreached in its questions to Flynn that sparked the lying charges.
