White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci has been given a team of nine bodyguards after receiving threats from angry Donald Trump supporters (Picture Getty) America’s most senior coronavirus expert has been given nine bodyguards after being threatened by Donald Trump supporters. White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci, 79, has been allocated the group of US Marshals for protection after being targeted by conspiracy theorists who believe he is trying to undermine President Trump ahead of his November re-election bid. Dr Fauci, who has served both Republican and Democrat presidents since being appointed during Ronald Reagan’s administration, has also spurned the online hashtag #FauciFraud, with internet trolls blaming him for nationwide lockdowns that have closed tens of thousands of businesses and so far seen 10 million people claim unemployment benefits. The infectious disease specialist’s vocal support for strict social distancing has been blamed for the increasing number of threats, with the US Department of Health and Human Services green-lighting bodyguards for him earlier this week. Asked about the threats on the Today show Thursday, Dr Fauci said: ‘I’ve chosen this life. I mean I know what it is. ‘There are things about it that are sometimes disturbing. But you just focus on the job you have to do, and just put all that stuff aside and try as best as possible not to pay attention to it.’ He went on to insist that the threats to his safety were ‘secondary’ to his work on helping the US through the coming weeks, with coronavirus infections and deaths predicted to rocket. Dr Fauci has occasionally clashed with Trump, and was seen covering his face when the president ‘joked’ about the so-called deep state (Picture: AP) Tensions between Dr Fauci and President Trump have occasionally surfaced at daily White House coronavirus briefings, with the immunologist directly contradicting Donald Trump’s claim that anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine could provide a miracle treatment for coronavirus. A fortnight ago, Dr Fauci was also seen covering his face with apparent exasperation when President Trump jokingly referred to the US State Department as the ‘Deep State Department,’ having previously accused its officials of conspiring against him. Health Department spokesman Caitlin Oakley explained that Dr Fauci is ‘an integral part of the U.S. government’s response against Covid-19.’ Oakley added: ‘Among other efforts, he is leading the development of a Covid-19 vaccine and he regularly appears at White House press briefings and media interviews.’ Coronavirus latest news and updates Visit our live blog for the latest updates: Coronavirus news live Read all new and breaking stories on our Covid-19 news page Coronavirus symptoms explained Find out the latest on which shops can stay open in a lockdown Who needs to go to work, who needs to stay at home and who is classed as a key worker?
