Top economist Joseph Stinglitz has delievered a stinging attack of Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis has left the US looking like a ‘third world’ country on course of a second Great Depression, a Nobel-prize winning economist has warned. Joseph Stiglitz has delivered a stinging criticism of the president, describing how millions of Americans are relying on food banks, turning up for work due to a lack of sick pay and dying because of health inequalities. ‘The numbers turning to food banks are just enormous and beyond the capacity of them to supply. It is like a third world country. The public social safety net is not working’ he said. Stiglitz, a long-term critic of Trump, said 14% of the population was dependent on food stamps. He also warned the country’s social infrastructure faces collapse with an unemployment rate that could hit 30% in the coming months. He said: ‘We have a safety net that is inadequate. The inequality in the US is so large. This disease has targeted those with the poorest health. In the advanced world, the US is one of the countries with the poorest health overall and the greatest health inequality.’ Joseph Stiglitz said the US was truning into a ‘third world country’ with millions of Americans relying on food stamps (Picture: Getty) {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T12M10S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/04\/23\/07\/27540084-0-image-a-13_1587622714112.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-04-23T07:25:47+0100”,“description”:“The director of the US Centers for Disease Control Robert Redfield backtracked on claims he made that there may be a second - and possibly more devastating - wave of Covid-19 in the future as he shared the stage with Donald Trump at the daily press briefing.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/04\/23\/302209198405303604\/480x270_MP4_302209198405303604.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Stiglitz was speaking to The Guardian to mark the publication of his book People, Power and Profits. When asked about the possibility of a Great Depression in the US, he said the ‘short answer is yes’ if Donald Trump stays in charge. ‘If you leave it to Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell [the Republican Senate majority leader] we will have a Great Depression. If we had the right policy structure in place we could avoid it easily’ he said. For all the latest news and updates on Coronavirus, click here. For our Coronavirus live blog click here. He pointed out that Republicans had opposed proposals to give those affected by coronavirus 10 days sick leave, describing this as ‘literally unbelievable’. ‘The safety net is not adequate and is propagating the disease. There is very weak unemployment insurance and people don’t think they can rely on it’ he said. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T29S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/04\/22\/06\/27493114-0-image-m-52_1587533255642.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-04-22T06:27:14+0100”,“description”:“President Donald Trump boasts about a low coronavirus mortality rate for the US, despite having the highest number of deaths worldwide.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/04\/22\/2010799552831731920\/480x270_MP4_2010799552831731920.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video He blamed Trump’s mismanagement for the closure of the White House office responsible for pandemics, the cutting of Center for Disease Control (CDC) funding, and for the lack of coronavirus tests. Stiglitz also condemned anti-lockdown protests in some corners of the US, which he accused Trump of encouraging. The president tweeted that Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia should be ‘liberated’ after they staged demonstrations against social distancing, drawing elements of the far-right. Stiglitz said a second outbreak was looking inevitable in parts of the states that are determined to reopen. Millions of Americans are relying on food banks during the coronavirus crisis (Picture: AP) A rally outside the Missouri Capitol to protests stay-at-home orders put into place due to the COVID-19 outbreak (Picture: AP) ‘In those circumstances it won’t be the government enforcing the lockdown, it will be fear. The concern is that people are not going to be spending on anything other than food and that’s the definition of a Great Depression. ‘We were unprepared but, even given the degree of unpreparedness, Trump’s decision to make this about politics rather than about science has meant we have responded far more poorly’ he said. The economist believes that Trump losing in the November elections and Democrats winning both houses of Congress could help move the country in a more progressive direction. He did assert, however, that Republicans would fight dirty. ‘There is voter suppression and gerrymandering,’ he said. ‘The Republican party knows it’s a minority party and there is a no-holds-barred struggle going on to make sure a minority party rules America.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
