Proven Strategies For F***ing Up a Crisis, by Donald J. TrumpThis Weak in Politics, Vol. 227 April 3, 2020 NOTE: If you missed our recent exclusive coverage of the latest federal order issued by President Trump, it can be found here. Believe it or not, it has only been 90 days since US officials were warned about the coronavirus based on discussions the director of the CDC had with Chinese colleagues. 90 days. That’s 630 days in dog days or 4,326 years in Trump days. In that time much has happened, and very little of it good. As such, we decided that this week’s TWITPOL would chronicle the first 90 days, for better or worse. And it’s worse, trust us. Sort of a guide to fucking up the crucial first 90 days. January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” — Donald J. Trump January 22: Do you trust that we’re going to know everything we need to know from China? “I do. I do. I have a great relationship with President Xi. We just signed probably the biggest deal ever made.” — Donald J. Trump January 29 — present: Vice President Mike Pence (sp?) thanks president for his courageous leadership January 30: “We think we have it very well under control… we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us … that I can assure you.” — You guessed it, Donald J. fucking Trump January 30: “I don’t want to talk about a victory lap over a very unfortunate, very malignant disease.” “I think it will help to accelerate the return of jobs to North America, some to the US and probably some to Mexico as well.” — The late Secretary of Commerce Wilbur L. Ross, during a TV interview 10 million unemployment claims (65 days) ago January 31: “There’s no doubt… that asymptomatic transmission is occurring.” — Dr. Tony Fauci February 10: “Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in.” — Meteorologist/Epidemiologist/Stable Genius, Donald J. Trump February 23: “We have it very much under control in this country.” — Dr. Tony Fauci. Just kidding. It was Trump. February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” — Donald J. Trump February 25: Stock market tumbles 3.6% February 26: “So we’re at the low level. So we’ve had very good luck.” “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” — “We’re going very substantially down, not up.” — Donald Trump, during a presser held 300,910 domestic coronavirus cases ago. February 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.” — February 29: “Everything is really under control.” — Donald J. “Baghdad Bob” during a speech at a conservative political gathering where the virus was spreading as he was speaking February 29: Surgeon General Jerome Adams tells nation wearing face masks will do nothing to help prevent the spread of coronavirus March 2: Surgeon General Jerome Adams tells nation NOT to wear face masks, they could actually help spread the virus March 7: “No, I’m not concerned at all. No, we’ve done a great job with it.” — Donald J. “What-Me Worry?” Trump March 9: “So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!” — Donald J. Trump March 10: “And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.” — Donald J. Trump March 13: The markets, anticipating Congress will agree on a coronavirus relief bill, surge — setting a new single day record March 13: Trump passes out signed copies of Dow Jones chart March 16: Markets plunge, largest single day drop in over three decades March 16: Trump does not pass out signed copies of Dow Jones chart March 16: Trump describes coronavirus, on which he was briefed two months ago, as “… a problem a month ago nobody ever thought about.” March 17: “I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” — Dr. Donald Jonas Salk March 18: Arizona Senator Martha McSally ® warns that asymmetric people are spreading the virus March 22: Dr. Tony Fauci, when pressed about the fact that what the president’s been saying about coronavirus “doesn’t comport with the facts,” replies, “ I know, but what do you want me to do?” March 23: Dr. Tony Fauci not present for WH corona briefing March 23: Massive public outcry about the absence of Dr. Tony Fauci March 24: Fans of facts, science, and information think Tony Fauci is Grrrrrreat!Meanwhile, Republicans think he is a miserable prick March 29: “Because the “Ratings” of my News Conferences etc. are so high, ‘Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers’ according to the @nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY. ‘Trump is reaching too many people, we must stop him,’ said one lunatic. — Donald J. Trump April 1: Georgia Governor Brian Kemp finally learns that asymptomatic/asymmetric people can spread the virus. For why this is a problem, see entries for January 31 and March 18 In Kemp’s defense, the Centers for Disease Control is a full 6.5 miles away from his home and office April 2: Dr. Tony Fauci’s security detail beefed up due to death threats April 2: Noted crisis logistics expert Jared Kushner informs the nation that the US federal stockpile of medical supplies is meant to be just that — a stockpile. It is NOT to be used except for emergencies, and in the event of an emergency, it can NOT be used because then we wouldn’t have a stockpile for, you know… emergencies April 2: Surgeon General Jerome Adams hints nation might want to consider using face masks as they may help prevent the spread of coronavirus For why this is a problem, see entries for February 29 and March 2 April 3: Trump says he inherited the problem, lamenting the fact that President Obama did not have tests available for COVID-19, a disease which first appeared in November of 2019 Wait…Fauci is getting fucking death threats???? We digress. April 3: Trump says coronavirus was “artificially induced” April 3: Trump makes joke about his personal involvement with models while discussing the potential death of hundreds of thousands of Americans April 3, 5:29pm: Trump announces people should wear cloth masks April 3, 5:29:11pm : Trump announces he will not wear cloth masks While that timeline was long, it was by no means exhaustive. We could have expanded it for pages. Similarly, we could have shortened it. In that spirit, we present: The 4 Most Significant Days in The Spread of Coronavirus in the United States November 17, 2019: A 55 year old resident of Hubei province in China, without any knowledge of the presence of a virus, falls ill February 19, 2020: A patient of undisclosed age in California, without any connection to known cases of coronavirus, is diagnosed with the virus March 10, 2020: A nation, with no known leadership, passes the 1,000 case threshold November 8, 2016: A baboon with an allergy to facts and accountability is elected President of the United States Finally, in other news, a heroic US Navy Captain was relieved of duty this week for attempting to save the lives of his crew. We wish this were a joke. And while we rarely if ever use other’s artwork, friend of TWITPOL, Peter Burling, captured the essence of the story brilliantly on canvas: Sunset on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, as her Captain walks the plank for defending his crew. And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where we should all be reminded that this is no time to develop unhealthy habits. Take an occasional break from eating junk foods and baked goods to eat regular meals. Take it from us. If you enjoy reading TWITPOL please seek help.
