Donald Trump’s handling of the crisis has been ‘terrible’ Piers Morgan said (Picture: Getty) Donald Trump’s handing of the coronavirus has been ‘terrible’ and exposed his ‘worst traits’, Piers Morgan said today. In a furious debate on Good Morning Britain, the presenter said the US President has ‘shown a complete inability to pivot to anything like the kind of leadership you need in a crisis’. Referring to dangerous statements made by Trump during a press conference last week, in which he suggested injecting disinfectant or shining UV light ‘under the skin’, Piers said the US – which has the highest global death toll – needs ‘calm, authoritative’ leadership giving accurate information and ‘showing empathy for all those whose lives have been lost’. ‘We’ve seen none of that, we’ve just seen ‘rally Trump’. The same guy we saw before, picking fights with the media. Picking fights with the democrats. Coming out with ludicrous, crazy theories about bleach which he then claims were a sarcastic joke,’ he said. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T52S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/04\/27\/08\/27692346-0-image-a-1_1587971989674.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-04-27T08:19:40+0100”,“description”:“Piers Morgan has typically been a supporter of the US President”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/04\/27\/4041496283612007699\/640x360_MP4_4041496283612007699.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video He added: ‘Everyone can see he wasn’t being sarcastic or joking – so now he’s lying. ‘All the worst traits of Trump have now come to the fore and it’s really damaging, both to him and to the country.’ For all the latest news and updates on Coronavirus, click here. The presenter then clashed with US TV host Ben Ferguson who claimed the president was only answering a question from the press when he mentioned trialling injections of bleach – despite the president himself saying he was asking the press a sarcastic question. Ben claimed it was a ‘lie’ the Trump’s comments encouraged people to injest bleach. The New York City Department of Health said it saw an uptick in Lysol and bleach exposures after the president wondered about the prospect of the disinfectants being used as an internal treatment for the coronavirus. Just 24 hours after Trump made his comments at a press conference, the NYC Poison Control Center managed nine cases about exposure to Lysol, 10 bleach cases and 11 cases related to other household cleaners, for a total of 30 cases. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M27S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/04\/24\/07\/27588836-0-image-a-10_1587710322137.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-04-24T07:39:28+0100”,“description”:“President Donald Trump suggests that injecting people with disinfectant or blasting light under their skin could help treat coronavirus.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/04\/24\/269661761381380546\/480x270_MP4_269661761381380546.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Piers said: ‘You must look at the bleach comment as just completely dangerous. He should not have even mentioned it. ‘I feel like its defending the indefensible. It is incredibly dangerous.’ Political commentator and former democrat Capri Cafaro told the host: ‘I may be a democract but I do not want our president to fail. But Piers you are right, what we are seeing right now is someone lacking empathy, someone who is incapable of getting past fighting with the press at a time when we have a pandemic and Americans are dying. ‘Whether or not the bleach comment was sarcastic or not – there is no time or place for sarcasm in a global pandemic where millions are out of work and thousands are dying. ‘Either it’s sarcastic or it’s about a UV study – but people have gone to the hospital, it has forced companies to make official statements as a result of what the president said. Words matter. ‘We’ve lacked a cohesive strategy from the White House which has caused a patchwork of response across the country.’ According to the latest tally by the Johns Hopkins University, the US has had 965,910 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the highest toll in the world. Of those cases, 54,876 people have died. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
