Having already sought to blame China, the Obama administration, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and individual state governors for various setbacks during the pandemic, the US President turned his fury on the press. Part-way through the daily conference he showed a White House-produced film, called a ‘campaign-style video’ by one reporter present, lashing out at the media for criticising the way he has dealt with the outbreak. The meltdown appears to have been triggered by a New York Times report published over the weekend detailing how the president ‘was warned about the potential for a pandemic’ but ‘was slow to absorb the scale of the risk and to act accordingly’. It includes audio of one of the Times’ reporters who authored the critical story, Maggie Haberman, describing on the newspaper’s podcast how his travel ban was ‘probably effective because it did actually take a pretty aggressive measure against the spread of the virus’. However, in her very next sentence – which was not included in the clip – Ms Haberman adds: ‘The problem is, it was one of the last things that he did for several weeks.’ Nevertheless, Trump later declared the Times story ‘a total fake’, adding his hope that ‘those papers are all going out of business’.
