US President Donald Trump speaks during the daily coronavirus disease task force briefing (Picture: Reuters) Donald Trump has again supported anti-lockdown protests across the US, going against his own public health advice on social distancing. The president said Americans have ‘got cabin fever’ and want ‘their lives back’ during his Sunday White House briefing. He said: ‘If people feel that way, you’re allowed to protest. Some governors have gone too far, some of the things that happened are maybe not so appropriate.’ He rejected a reporter’s question asking if he was inciting violence, saying he’s never seen so many American flags, adding: ‘These people love our country. They want to get back to work.’ The protests have attracted a strong showing of pro-Trump supporters, with demonstrators seen wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats and clothes. The demonstrators believe the shutdowns have gone too far and have harmed business in areas where there have not been major outbreaks, like New York City. For our Coronavirus live blog click here. Washington Governor Jay Inslee told ABC: ‘I don’t know any other way to characterize it, when we have an order from governors, both Republicans and Democrats, that basically are designed to protect people’s health, literally their lives, to have a president of the United States basically encourage insubordination, to encourage illegal activity.’ Inslee said Trump’s outburst on social media can ‘can inspire people to ignore things that actually can save their lives.’ Last week, Trump called on protest groups in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia to ‘liberate’ their states. Trump said the second amendment was ‘under siege’ in a direct challenge to Virginia’s governor Ralph Northam, who signed new measures on gun control into law last week. The president previously said the state’s lawmakers are using the pandemic to ‘take your guns away’. He said: ‘If people in Virginia aren’t careful that’s what’s going to happen to them.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
