Some Americans haven’t taken kindly to the lockdown measures (Picture: Paul Hennessy/SOPA Images/REX) A number of states across the US have seen citizens protesting against the coronavirus lockdowns in place there. There have been groups demonstrating in the likes of Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and Virginia. In doing so, they’ve defied the lockdown measures which have been implemented in an effort to keep both them and their fellow citizens safe by halting the spread of the virus which has, at the time of writing, resulted in the deaths of over 31,400 people in the US so far. Why have there been protests against lockdown in the US? Demonstrators calling for a reversal of ongoing lockdowns that have seen thousands of businesses close and more than 20 million Americans out of work. ‘Quarantine is when you restrict movement of sick people. Tyranny is when you restrict the movement of healthy people,’ Meshawn Maddock, one Michigan group’s organiser, told Fox News. This week, President Donald Trump called on three states, Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia – all of which have Democrat governors – to ‘liberate’ themselves from the lockdown measures in place there. LIBERATE MICHIGAN! LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!’ The second amendment refers to ‘right of the people to keep and bear arms’ as written in the United States Constitution, and Trump’s mention of it here appears to reference Governor Ralph Northam’s crackdown on gun ownership rights in Virginia. Meanwhile the President’s call to action for Michigan came even though the state has been one of the worst-hit by Covid-19 with more than 29,000 confirmed cases and 2,000 deaths as of Friday afternoon. Trump’s tweets were shared hours after he declined to condemn demonstrations being held at multiple state capitol buildings. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T7M6S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/04\/17\/06\/27304904-0-image-a-19_1587103083085.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-04-17T07:06:57+0100”,“description”:“Trump to ‘reopen’ the US state by state after claiming that the country was over the coronavirus peak.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/04\/17\/2277268604107731146\/640x360_MP4_2277268604107731146.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, told CNN on Thursday: ‘A small segment of the state is protesting and that’s their right’ She added that many are now ‘stir crazy’ at home, and concerned about making ends meet. ‘The sad part is, though,’ Whitmer said, ‘that the more they’re out and about, the more likely they are to spread Covid-19, and the more likely we’re going to have to take this posture for a longer period of time.’ Meanwhile, Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine previously tweeted on the subject of maintaining lockdown: ‘I get it.
