Donald Trump has vowed to protect Asian American people amid claims his usage of the term ‘Chinese virus’ has put them at increased risk of racist attacks (Picture: AP) Donald Trump has vowed to protect the Asian American community after repeatedly referring to coronavirus as ‘the Chinese Virus.’ The President of the United States issued a Twitter plea after a spike on attacks on Asian people in the US, with many critics claiming his choice of language helped stoke racial tensions. He wrote: ‘It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world. They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form. They are working closely with us to get rid of it. WE WILL PREVAIL TOGETHER!’ The president repeated the remarks at his latest coronavirus press conference on Monday. The president went on to claim he was keen to rename Covid-19 after Beijing officials spread conspiracy theories that the illness had been created by the US military and deliberately planted in China. Last week, Trump also refused to condemn the use of the nickname ‘kung flu’ to describe coronavirus, after an unnamed White House worker reportedly used the term when chatting to an Asian political reporter. On Monday, Governor of California Gavin Newsom reported a sharp uptick on racist attacks on Asian Americans in his state. ‘One thing I also want to express is a deep, deep recognition of the xenophobia and the racism that is being perpetuated against Asians in our state. ‘We have seen a huge increase in people that are assaulting people on the basis of how they were born and they way they look. ‘I just want folks to know we are better than that.’ Newsom did not criticize the president directly, and has spoken highly of Trump in recent days for offering California all the help he has requested to help try and curb the spread of the disease. California has so far seen 1,802 coronavirus diagnoses and 35 deaths. A total of 43,224 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the United States, and 583 people have died as a result.
