Donald Trump is set to announce the closure of the United States’ southern border with Mexico on Friday (Picture: Evan Vucci) Donald Trump is to close the United States southern border with Mexico as the coronavirus crisis continues to worsen. The White House announced that the border will be closed to all but essential traffic on Friday, as the number of US diagnoses came close to 15,000. Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told MailOnline that Trump would formally announce the closure at his daily coronavirus briefing later on Friday. Wolf said that he and other officials were ‘really looking at limiting non essential travel across that border.’ He added: ‘We want to make sure that cargo continues, trade continues, healthcare workers continue to be able to traverse that border. But tourism, recreational activities, and other things need to stop during this.’ The US-Mexico border, including this crossing point in Tijuana, will be closed to all but essential traffic in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus (Picture: AP) Mexico currently has 164 coronavirus diagnoses, with one person there killed by Covid-19, the disease caused by coronavirus. The US has seen 218 Covid-19 deaths so far, with diagnosis numbers set to rocket in the coming days as widespread testing becomes available. Earlier this week, the US and Canada jointly agreed to close their border ‘by mutual consent.’ Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said goods would still be sent between the two countries to avoid shortages and help prop up their flagging economies amid fears of a worldwide recession. Last week, Trump banned travelers from Europe from coming to the US, although he said citizens and green card holders living in countries under the ban could still come home. But yesterday the US State Department issued an advisory telling Americans who are currently abroad to come home now, or face being stranded for months.
