Donald Trump insists that Americans should stop worrying about coronavirus despite the stock market suffering such huge drops that ‘Black Monday’ began trending online. The markets-obsessed president tweeted Monday: ‘So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. ‘Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!’ Trump sent the tweet after the Dow Jones dropped by almost 2,000 points as it opened Monday morning from 25,864 points to 24,031 – equivalent to 7.11% of the index’s total value. Stocks tumbled by a total of 2,033 points before trading was automatically suspended for 15 minutes to avoid catastrophic economic damage. Stocks were over 1,600 points down at 11:am EST. Trump has repeatedly taken credit for record stock market gains since coming to power, but has remained far quieter about a fortnight of losses as the number of coronavirus diagnoses began to climb across the globe. He has now blamed ‘fake news’ for tumbling stocks, and an oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia that has itself been sparked by the coronavirus crisis. It has infected at least 616 people in the US, and killed 22. Trump shared other tweets Monday that appeared designed to try and calm US fears over the disease, and assert that his strategies to deal with it were working. He wrote: ‘Great job being done by the @VP and the CoronaVirus Task Force. Thank you!’ Trump posted another tweet referring to a ban on non-US citizens who had visited China within the last two weeks, saying: ‘The BEST decision made was the toughest of them all – which saved many lives. Our VERY early decision to stop travel to and from certain parts of the world!’ He later wrote: ‘So much FAKE NEWS! ‘Good for the consumer, gasoline prices coming down! Saudi Arabia and Russia are arguing over the price and flow of oil. That, and the Fake News, is the reason for the market drop!’
