The draconian measures come into effect from Friday, and do not apply to the United Kingdom. Trump revealed his plans in an Oval Office address on Wednesday night. Speaking from the White House at 9pm EST Wednesday, President Trump said he was taking ‘strong but necessary’ measures – including the travel ban – and said his earlier ban on flights from China had helped the US avoid mass outbreaks of the virus like those seen in Europe. The president’s address came amid mounting criticism of his handling of the coronavirus crisis, amid fears the US is sitting on a timebomb of undiagnoses cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Earlier on Wednesday, President Trump finally vowed to tackle the mounting pandemic head-on, tweeting: ‘I am fully prepared to use the full power of the Federal Government to deal with our current challenge of the CoronaVirus!’ Trump later wrote: ‘The Media should view this as a time of unity and strength. We have a common enemy, actually, an enemy of the World, the CoronaVirus. President Trump has been criticized over claims he has responded too slowly to the coronavirus crisis, which has seen the whole of Italy, including this street in Turin, put on lockdown with everything bar supermarkets, pharmacies and banks closed down as diagnoses rocket (Picture: EPA) ‘We must beat it as quickly and safely as possible. There is nothing more important to me than the life & safety of the United States!’ His determined tone was in marked contrast to a press conference Tuesday which saw Trump tell Americans ‘Just stay calm. It will go away. It’s really working out.’ Trump was previously criticized for unveiling measures to try and tackle the potential economic effects of coronavirus while avoiding the human tragedy of the disease, which White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci has warned is 10 times more deadly than influenza. The president has tied the success of his administration to stock market gains, with the Dow Jones index of America’s biggest 30 listed companies closing 1,464 points down Wednesday – almost 6% of its total value. The index has lost 20% of its value in a month, and has tumbled from a Coronavirus has so far infected 1,085 people across the United States and killed 32, with most victims elderly residents of the same care home in King County, Washington. The disease has infected over 120,000 people worldwide and killed over 4,300. China has seen the vast majority of diagnoses and death, but coronavirus has snowballed in Italy in recent days, with over 12,000 people now diagnosed with the illness, and 827 known to have died as a result.
