Donald Trmp has finally stopped referring to coronavirus as ‘the Chinese virus’ (Picture: AP) Donald Trump has stopped referring to coronavirus as ‘the Chinese virus’ after an upswing in racist attacks on Asian American people. Addressing a press conference on Monday evening, Trump repeatedly referred to Covid-19 as ‘the virus,’ having spent last week repeatedly dubbing it ‘the Chinese virus’ both at press conferences and in his tweets. Trump began Monday’s press conference by re-reading tweets he sent on Monday afternoon, saying: ‘It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world. ‘They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form. They are working closely with us to get rid of it. WE WILL PREVAIL TOGETHER!’ Trump went on to use ‘the virus’ repeatedly during an almost 15-minute long speech, hours after California Governor Gavin Newsom said there had been a sharp upswing in attacks on Asian Americans in his state. Monday’s press conference also saw Trump reiterate his commitment to shutting down the United States for 15 days in a bit to curb the spread of coronavirus. But he vowed to get the US up and running as soon as possible after the lockdown, which is now into its eighth day, after saying ‘the cure cannot be worse than the solution.’ Trump said: ‘America will soon be open for business, a lot sooner than the three or four months some people are suggesting. ‘We are not going to let the cure be worse than the problem. ‘We have it pretty well shut down to get rid of this invisible enemy… ‘This was a medical problem. We are not going to let it turn into a long-lasting financial problem. ‘It started as a medical problem and we are not going to let it go beyond that.’ The US now has over 43,300 coronavirus diagnoses, with almost 600 people killed by the disease.
