Expecting a new child has given Connie Yates and Chris Gard hope again (Picture: PA) Three years since losing their 11-month-old child after a High Court fight with doctors, the parents of Charlie Gard have revealed they are expecting a second baby. Connie Yates, 34, and her 35-year-old fiancée Chris Gard say they are ‘extremely grateful,’ to have another baby on the way after going through such a traumatic ordeal. After a tense five-week wait for a blood test and another two weeks for the result, the pair learned their new child is healthy. Care worker Connie said being 17-weeks pregnant has given her and her partner hope again and has ‘put a smile on our faces’. She added: ‘It is mixed emotions. We always think about Charlie and we hope that he’s happy with us having another baby, but we’ll never forget him and love him just as much – always have and always will.’ Charlie Gard became the centre of a bitter High Court battle between his parents and Great Ormond Street Hospital (Picture: PA) His parents refused to give up hope and insisted he should go to the US for pioneering new treatment (Picture: PA) Chris said: ‘After everything we’ve been through, I’m just looking forward to the simple things people take for granted – birthdays and taking our child to their first day at school. We just hope we can give this baby the best life possible.’ The couple were thrust into the media spotlight in 2017 after taking London’s Great Ormond Street children’s hospital to court in a bid to save Charlie. Two months after his birth August 2016, Charlie became ill with incurable mitochondrial syndrome – a rare genetic disorder causing a wide range of issues including brain damage, muscle weakness and heart disease. Doctors said it would be best to let him die, but Connie and Chris refused to give up hope and became embroiled in a bitter court challenge to get him transferred from Great Ormond Street Hospital to the US for groundbreaking new treatment. Two months after his birth, Charlie became ill with a rare and incurable genetic disorder called mitochondrial syndrome (Picture: PA) Connie and Chris’s fight gained the attention of the world, including the Pope and Donald Trump (Picture: AFP) US President Donald Trump and the Pope were among the world’s influential figures who waded into the debate which raged on through the summer of 2017. But by the time legal arguments had finished, it was too late for Charlie, who had grown far too weak to survive. Appearing in court with tears streaming down her face, Connie declared her son would be taken off life support within a matter of days. Charlie passed away on July 28, 2017 and was buried with his favourite cuddly toy monkeys just a ten minute walk away from his parents’ home in Bedfont, south west London. The pair say they will always grieve for their son and that the latest news has brought up ‘mixed emotions’. Connie said: ‘We always think about Charlie and we hope that he’s happy with us having another baby, but we’ll never forget him and love him just as much – always have and always will,’ They don’t know if their new child will be a boy or a girl, but all they care about is that their new arrival is healthy.
