Donald Trump has said that coronavirus will not withstand warmer weather (Picture: SIPA) Donald Trump has claimed that coronavirus will recede as the warmer weather arrives, following a chat with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the spread of the disease. According to reports the US leader told this to a meeting of state governors at the White House, saying that Xi had explained this to him during a ‘long talk’. ‘The heat, generally speaking, kills this kind of virus,’ he said. ‘A lot of people think that goes away in April as the heat comes in. ‘We’re in great shape though, we have 12 cases, 11 cases, but we’re in very good shape.’ So can heat really kill the new coronavirus? Here’s what you need to know… Can heat kill coronavirus? There is no evidence yet to suggest that the new coronavirus will be killed off by warmer weather (Picture: AP) As a rule, viruses similar to coronavirus do tend to recede in warmer weather, as they are not able to tolerate heat and humidity – which also explains why colds and flu tend to be more common in the winter months. However it’s not yet known if the novel coronavirus will react in the same way once the warmer weather starts to arrive – which in China, will be from around March. Medical experts have said that it was ‘too early to say’ whether the new virus will follow the same pattern of other viruses and recede as the weather gets warmer. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T30S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/02\/04\/15\/24299624-0-image-a-29_1580830676155.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-02-04T15:37:30+0000”,“description”:“The Humane Society has stepped in to feed the animals.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/02\/04\/1850786122915594732\/640x360_MP4_1850786122915594732.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Tennessee, and an adviser to the centres for disease control (CDC), has said: ‘I have been saying we have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. ‘Someone has told the president that respiratory illnesses such as flu tend to recede in the spring, and this is true. But this is a new virus and a new host – humans. ‘It’s very difficult to predict. We don’t know exactly.’ How many people in the UK have coronavirus? Eight people in the UK have been diagnosed with coronavirus (Picture: EPA) Eight people in the UK have currently been diagnosed with the virus. The four new patients were all contacts of a businessman – since named as 53-year-old Steve Walsh – who was diagnosed in Brighton last week and who contracted the virus at a conference in Singapore. On his way back to the UK, he visited a chalet in a ski region of France, where he met the other Britons who have been taken ill. They are all being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Royal Free hospitals in London. The first two cases in England were diagnosed in York, while Walsh was the third, and the fourth came into contact with a previously confirmed case.
