Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, had revealed the ending weeks ago, declaring that there was “no chance” Donald Trump would be convicted and removed from office. The measure of success for the seven impeachment managers appointed by Nancy Pelosi to prosecute the House’s case against the president was therefore not whether Trump remained in office, but whether they could persuade the Republican-controlled Senate to summon additional witnesses when they have the opportunity next week.
