This Weak in Politics, Vol. 217 January 23, 2020 For reasons that will be explained later, this week’s issue is going to be shorter than usual — making it the Mick Mulvaney of satire pieces. Besides, the week’s news was really dominated by one thing and one thing only. The impeachment “trial” of the 45th and dumbest President of the United States in our nation’s capital. A trial that is expected to be so volatile and explosive that there’s already been a movie made about it. As a result of this tumultuous and historic event, Senate Majority “Leader” Mitch McConnell has come out of his shell… so to speak. This week saw the “leader’s” triumphant return from his damp, leafy pond to the perch from which he destroys all that is good — the United States Senate. “Leader” McConnell, being a patriot and all, has assured the American people that the process he and the defendant in the case designed will produce a fair and open trial in accordance with the highest standards of American jurisprudence. Well, without all those pesky annoyances that often accompany American trials like impartiality, witnesses, and evidence. Democrats, being annoying nudniks, came to the trial with superfluous things like “facts,” while Republicans draped themselves in flags and argued that the constitution is very clear when it lays out the powers of the president. Specifically, they argue, the constitution states that The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States (we believe they were referring specifically to Oregon, Montana and Idaho here). They added that the president, again according to the constitution, “shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court (unless the president is black — in which case the vacancy shall be held until the black president is replaced by a regular American one) and the president shall, with complete impunity, be allowed to abuse his power because that isn’t against the law. Republicans also argued that the president is above such treachery and dishonesty: https://ift.tt/2ROBQcE In all seriousness, the Republican defense of the president has evolved tremendously. In the early days of the Ukraine scandal, their defense was “he didn’t do it.” Then it morphed into to “he did nothing wrong, it was a perfect call. By the third week of the scandal they moved from the president to “oh yeah, where’s the whistleblower?” And in the past week the evolution continued apace, going from “abuse of power isn’t illegal,” before finally landing on their closing argument, which seems to be “fuck you, we have more senators than you do.” In short, the Republicans are privately cringing a little, but they remain hopeful that this will all come out in the wash. Speaking of coming out in the wash: Q. What do you get when you put your Uncle Sam costume, a Native American rug, and former presidential candidate, Robert Haines in the same load in your washing machine? A. Mark McMinnon. Mark McKinnon, Ladder Day Saint That non-sequitur was brought to you because we have a regular reader with a HUGE man-crush on Mark McKinnon. We’ll call this regular reader “Mike,” because that’s his name. To protect his dignity, we won’t say where he’s from — but we can tell you it rhymes with Vest Wirginia. Due to heavy hearts, we are going to cut this issue short. For those of you who are regular readers, like the aforementioned Mike from Vest Wirginia, you know that we at TWITPOL are quite fond of two things — comedy and journalism. (Well, three things if you count Nicolle Wallace.) That makes writing this week incredibly difficult as we lost a giant in each of those disciplines in a span of just 48 hours. Terry Jones and Jim Lehrer. Jones the comedian and Lehrer the journalist were giants in their respective fields whose influence can’t be overstated. And each crossed into the other’s field from time to time, with Jones moving away from his cerebral and physical comedy to serving as a straight television presenter on educational history programs (or programmes if you will), and Lehrer once moving away from his staid, sober journalism to attempting “comedy” as this clip shows. https://ift.tt/2tK0gfm We like to describe them as polymaths, mostly because no one is really sure how to pronounce polymath, so it must feel awkward to read this sentence. And yet, polymaths they were. They will both be sorely missed, and neither can be replaced. And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where justice isn’t only blind, it is often dumb.
