Christopher Sambrook was convicted after launching a campaign of abuse against his ex when she found a new partner (Picture: Cavendish Press) A man has been convicted of racial hate crimes after bombarding his ex-girlfriend with abuse when she found a new partner. Christopher Sambrook, 29, subjected Catherine Bell to a two-year campaign of abusive messages and comments, including a drunken rant about Donald Trump in a pub. Sambrook sported a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat and shouted in support of the US president, while Miss Bell was trying to toast a friend’s move to America. The quality control inspector capitalised on Miss Bell’s dislike of Mr Trump posted a series of jokes about the Ku Klux Klan and that he’d ‘stab anyone’ who didn’t like the American leader. Sambrook was convicted of racially aggravated harassment (Picture: Christopher Sambrook/Cavendish Press) He also posted racist jokes on social media including a meme comparing a picture of an 18th Century slave ship to the Black Friday sales. Police warned him about his behaviour but he was arrested last year after writing ‘let the tranny brothers burn’ in a post which Catherine believed was in reference to her new partner’s transgender sister. Sambrook was convicted of racially aggravated harassment and given 12 weeks in jail, suspended for 18 months, after he apologised for his conduct. He was also banned from contacting Miss Bell for two years. Prosecutor Beth Pilling said he sent her unwanted messages after the pair – who had been together a year – broke up in 2012, but escalated his behaviour after finding out she had a new man. She told jurors he used a group chat on social media to target Miss Bell ‘in a racial, humiliating and sexual manner’ and her new partner, after she began another relationship in 2016. ‘He then made a comment about extreme sexual acts which he said they had done together and he called her a ‘whore’ and a ‘hooker’, and told her she should die and burn,’ added Ms Pilling. Sambrook ignored repeated requests from his ex to stop contacting her (Picture: Christopher Sambrook/ Cavendish Press) ‘He also mentioned an MSN conversation between them from when they were together which references material of a sexual nature and tried to humiliate her by threatening to it into the chat.’ Ms Pilling said he continued to contact Catherine with racist death threats to her and her family, to the point where she phoned police. Sambrook contacted Catherine a handful more times over the following 18 months, before she called police for a non-molestation order. In a personal victim statement Miss Bell said: ‘Since these offences I have not been going out for fear of bumping into him. ‘I was afraid when going out with friends that he would be there. I’m worried for myself and my family that he will carry out the contents of his messages. ‘This has affected me a lot and I don’t want to continue living like this. I am worried about his future actions.’ He left court with a suspended jail sentence and a community work order (Picture: Cavendish Press) Ms Pilling said that during the hearing held at the family court, he admitted sending all the messages. In mitigation, defence lawyer Gavin Clarke said Sambrook was ‘not in the right frame of mind’ after suffering depression and anxiety, and showed ‘genuine remorse’ for his behaviour. In total there were 13 instances of contact between Sambrook and Catherine over two-and-a-half years, of which three or four were in person, and the rest via social media or messages. Sentencing, JP Jo Hossle-Standring told Sambrook: ‘We do feel this offence crosses the custodial threshold, but we feel we can suspend the sentence.’ Sambrook was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and pay £200 in court costs.
