President Hassan Rouhani also hit out at Boris Johnson’s comments that Iran agree to a new nuclear deal negotiated by President Trump (Picture: EPA) The Iranian president has warned that European soldiers ‘may be in danger’ in the Middle East, after Britain, France and Germany increased pressure on Tehran for failing to comply with a nuclear agreement. In a televised speech today, President Rouhani said: ‘Today, the American soldier is in danger, tomorrow the European soldier could be in danger.’ The Iranian leader also hit out at European leaders for ‘failing to act as an independent block’. Iran has said it would be ending its commitments to limit enrichment of Uranium as part of the nuclear deal designed to stop it acquiring a nuclear weapon. It made the announcement following the killing of General Qasem Soleimani on January 3 in a US drone strike. The nuclear deal was agreed in 2015 between Iran and the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany. Iran has stepped up its nuclear programme after the killing of General Qasem Soleimani (Picture: AFP) Although Trump had pulled out of the agreement in May 2018, European leaders had said they would abide by it. However, after Iran’s decision to increase its nuclear programme, Britain, France and Germany have taken steps to reimpose international sanctions on Iran. The European parties triggered a dispute-settlement mechanism contained within the agreement. That mechanism could lead to the United Nations Security Council reimposing international sanctions on Iran’s economy, banks and some top officials within two months. President Rouhani also hit out at Boris Johnson, rejecting calls made by the prime minister to agree to a new nuclear deal negotiated by President Trump. He said: ‘This Mr Prime Minister in London, I don’t know how he thinks. He says let’s put aside the nuclear deal and put the Trump plan in action. His comments come after rockets fired from an unknown group targeted a US base in Iraq last night where 200 British personnel are based (Picture: AFP) Boris Johnson has called on Iran to abide by the deal (Picture: PA) ‘If you take the wrong step, it will be to your detriment. Pick the right path. The right path is to return to the nuclear deal.’ UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab warned Iran over its breaches of the nuclear deal. He said: ‘Each of these actions were individually serious. Together, they now raise acute concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.’ After Trump quit the nuclear deal, the US has reimposed sanctions on Iran that have crippled its economy. Tehran insists it wants to keep the agreement but cannot do so if it receives none of the promised economic benefits. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
