Donald Trump hit out at ‘prophets of doom’ seen as a dig at teenager Greta Thunberg (Picture: Getty/AP) Donald Trump appears to have taken a swipe at teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg by rejecting ‘prophets of doom’. Greta was in the audience to watch as the US President spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he lashed out at ‘radical socialists’. After claiming America is ‘winning again like never before’ the president told the audience: ‘We must reject the perennial prophets of doom and their predictions of the apocalypse.’ He said ‘this is a time for optimism’ and added: ‘They predicted overpopulation and the end of oil. ‘We will never let radical socialists destroy our economy.’ It is being seen as a swipe at the Swedish climate campaigner, who earlier told the forum that governments had done ‘basically nothing’ to reverse climate change. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T1M5S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2020\/01\/21\/11\/23675270-0-image-a-7_1579606205630.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2020-01-21T11:30:01+0000”,“description”:“Donald Trump speaks at World Economic Forum ‘We will never let radical socialists destroy our economy’.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2020\/01\/21\/3471754019582490262\/480x270_MP4_3471754019582490262.mp4”,“height”:270,“width”:480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was in the audience (Picture: AP) Greta told the forum that governments had done ‘basically nothing’ to reverse climate change (Picture: AP) Outside the conference hall, the president told reporters his is a ‘big believer in the environment’ before adding: ‘What I want is the cleanest water and the cleanest air.’ He also appeared to confirm the US will join the One Trillion Trees initiative launched at the forum. Mr Trump is attempting to sell the US to the global business community with just hours to go until his historic impeachment trial begins in Washington. During his address he claimed America’s economic turnaround has been ‘nothing short of spectacular’. Climate change and environmental destruction top the risks highlighted by world decision-makers in a survey ahead of the 2020 gathering of the global elite in the Swiss ski resort. The forum has chosen sustainability as its main theme this year as a result. But the US leader – who once described global warming as a ‘hoax’ – has already raised eyebrows by arriving with a huge convoy of jeeps, a jet and seven helicopters. Trump arrived at the forum aimed at climate change in a convoy of jeeps, a jet and seven helicopters (Picture: Reuters) Donald Trump told reporters outside the conference hall ‘what I want is the cleanest water and the cleanest air’ (Picture: EPA) He made his dramatic entrance moments after Greta told the business and political leaders that they had done ‘nothing’ to address the environmental emergency. Speaking on a panel with other young activists she said: ‘The climate and environment is a hot topic right now, thanks to young people pushing. ‘Pretty much nothing has been done, since the global emissions of CO2 have not reduced.’ The Swedish teen added that the global movement sparked by her school strike was only the very beginning in the fight against global warming and accused those in power of ignoring science. She said: ‘I know you don’t want to report about this and talk about this but I assure you I will continue to repeat these numbers until you do.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
