Eddie Gallagher was cleared of stabbing a captured 17-year-old ISIS fighter to death (Picture: Reuters/Free Eddie Gallagher/Navy SEAL Chief/Facebook) A Navy SEAL platoon leader controversially cleared of war crimes by Donald Trump has been called ‘toxic’ and ‘freaking evil’, Iraq veterans have told investigators. Video evidence seen by war crimes investigators shows former members of Eddie Gallagher’s elite commando unit discussing the chief attacking civilians and shooting a 12-year-old boy. But the sniper and medic denies the allegations, dismissing them as smears by jealous comrades who could not match his performance. Speaking to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) one of Alpha Platoon SEAL Team 7’s most experienced members, Special operator first class Craig Miller, said: ‘The guy is freaking evil. He added: ‘I think Eddie was proud of it, and that was, like, part of it for him.’ He was cleared of premeditated murder in July but was found guilty of posing for a picture by the teenager’s corpse (Picture: Getty Images) The testimonies were published yesterday by the New York Times, who got hold of video footage and text messages from several members of the elite unit. Special operator first class Corey Scott said: ‘You could tell he was perfectly okay killing anybody that was moving.’ Meanwhile special operator first class Joshua Vriens added: ‘The guy was toxic.’ Gallagher, now 40, was originally accused of premeditated murder after allegedly stabbing to death a captured and wounded 17-year-old ISIS fighter in Iraq in May 2017. His trial in 2019 whipped conservative media into a frenzy while Trump came out in support for the SEAL. The president intervened in March to have Gallagher removed from jail and placed in a Navy hospital where he had more freedom. Donald Trump has come out in support of Gallagher and insisted he wouldn’t be demoted (Picture: Free Eddie Gallagher/Navy SEAL Chief/Facebook) In July a military jury acquitted the defendant of murder by convicted him for posing for a picture next to the body of the ISIS fighter. He was demoted and the Navy removed his official SEAL Trident pin, signalling a loss of respect from the elite group. But Trump intervened again insisting over Twitter on November 21 Gallagher’s rank and badge would not be taken away. His comments came as multiple US news outlets reported that then-Navy Secretary Richard Spencer had threatened to stand down over the affair. But in November a Navy spokesman said the White House would not intervene (Picture: AP) Denying the claim, he said: ‘Contrary to popular belief, I am still here. I did not threaten to resign.’ He said he did not consider Trump’s tweet to be the kind of formal order he would need to act. On November 24 a spokesman said he could ‘confirm’ the Navy had been notified the White House would ultimately not intervene in the process against Gallagher. Eventually the NCIS began an inquiry and platoon members were called to give evidence. In a statement to the Times issued by Gallagher’s lawyer, he said: ‘My first reaction to seeing the videos was surprise and disgust that they would make up blatant lies about me, but I quickly realised that they were scared that the truth would come out of how cowardly they acted on deployment.’ Last weekend, Trump hosted Gallagher and his wife at Mar-a-Lago, the president’s Florida resort, where he spent Christmas.
