This Weak in Politics, Vol. 211Photo credit: Sean Gallup/Getty Images December 5, 2019 This week Donald trump continued what is now a three-year tradition of his — embarrassing the bejesus out of the nation on the world stage before having a hissy-fit and storming off. And to make matters worse, he returns to the US every single time. Perhaps he’s a glutton. Oops. We forgot to finish that last sentence. Perhaps he’s a glutton for punishment. This time, it was at the NATO Leaders’ Meeting in London — and world leaders are growing increasingly unable to keep a straight face when Trump speaks. https://ift.tt/2RzK3mP Aside from a few world leaders chuckling at Trump’s expense, led by Canadian PM Justin Biebeau, this year’s leadership meeting went about the same as Trump’s previous NATO visits — lots of impromptu and lengthy exchanges on camera as 65% of America cringed. https://ift.tt/2RqhFDA Trump feels these international events are annoying and unfair, lamenting the fact that he seems to be the only attendee who wants to put America first. He added “half the time, I don’t even know what the hell they’re talking about.” An aide then informed him that’s what the translation headphones he threw on the ground were for. Before Trump fled the wreckage of his personality disorder, he got into a tête à tête (see what we did there?) with another francophone, Emmanuel Macron. Without specifying the US and Trump, Macron suggested that a lack of a clear vision from key NATO powers has led to the organization suffering “brain death.” Trump says Macron’s comment about NATO being brain dead was nasty, insulting, and disrespectful. In his defense, insiders tell us that while Macron was speaking, Trump was distracted by an erotic dream involving Barney and Betty Rubble, Ivanka, and Stephen Miller, and when he heard the term brain dead, he assumed Macron was talking about him. On the Domestic front, House Democrats on the Intelligence Committee released their impeachment inquiry report (which can be found here), while the Judiciary Committee began its own round of hearings. Heightening the urgency of the events, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has instructed the Judiciary Committee to begin the heady task of drafting articles of impeachment. Despite the impeachment inquiry dividing the country along IQ lines, we can take pride in the fact that normal decorum has not been sacrificed in the process. For example, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s report soberly begins with, “This report reflects the evidence gathered thus far by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, in coordination with the Committee on Oversight and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, as part of the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry into Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States.” In turn, Trump said of Schiff, “I think he’s a maniac. I think Adam Schiff is a deranged human being. I think he grew up with a complex for lots of reasons that are obvious, I think he’s a very sick man and he lies.” Trump says impeachment was not meant to be used “this way” — meaning “against him.” And as ever, Republicans — particularly elected ones — have his back. His chief defenders at this juncture are the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee — a group that will never be mistaken for MENSA. Now, we aren’t saying Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee are a non-diverse, not-too-bright monolith, but, have a look for yourself. This lack of intellectual heft on the Republican side was no more evident than it was during a heated exchange (pictured below) between Ranking Member Doug “Judy” Collins and Stanford Law Professor Pamela Karlan, in which Judy suggested Pamela hadn’t done her homework, and Pamela bitch-slapped Judy back into his pre-enlightenment cave. To give you a sense of the intellectual chasm between these two, here’s a scientifically accurate rating of the intellects of the key figures from the photo above, going from highest IQ to lowest. To be fair, Republicans don’t have much of a fact-based case to argue, so it really doesn’t matter who they have leading the charge. And if it doesn’t matter who leads the charge, why not Collins? It might get him to stop eating the paste in the committee supply closet. Now, when the inevitable impeachment moves to the Senate, there’s no question the GOP will bring their best and their brightest, notably Vanderbilt/U Va./Oxford educated Senator John Kennedy. Kennedy, no stranger to the camera, has already begun arguing against impeachment, as this clip from Sunday’s Meet the Press shows. https://ift.tt/33Q3ZEd As for the Democrats, the big news this week was that Democratic Senator Hamila Karras dropped out of the presidential primary, winnowing the field down to a paltry 412 candidates. Karras gained traction during the first Democratic debate by attacking Joe Biden for his support of bussing in the 70s and prohibition in the 20s. Karras was the better-known half of an enduring power-couple, having been married to the late Alex “Mongo” Karras of Webster fame until his death in 2012. And what would Alex think of the role his wife is now playing in the broader scope of history? https://ift.tt/2PhT54V News of the California Senator’s campaign departure was reported via tweet by fellow journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere), making him the nation’s most prominent Harris tweeter. In all seriousness, Kamala Harris’s departure is a loss. How cool would this have been? And that’s the way the weak spent the week in a nation where the party that’s picking judges who’ll shape the legal landscape for generations is actively encouraging mothers not to let their babies grow up to go to Harvard or Stanford.
