Boris Johnson is the only person to win the Foot in Mouth award three times (Picture: Getty Images) Boris Johnson has won a lifetime achievement award for ‘prolonged and consistent nonsense’. Every year, the Confused.com Plain English Campaign awards single out the public figures who have made the most baffling comments over the last year. Not only did the prime minister come in first place for 2019, clinching the Foot In Mouth Award, he was also the ‘winner’ of the 40th anniversary Lifetime Achievement Award. Beating out competition from Donald Trump and Russell Brand, Mr Johnson was ‘honoured’ for several ‘incomprehensible’ comments he has made over 2019. These included ‘Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a Titanic success of it’ and ‘I could not fail to disagree with you less’. Another ‘gobbledygook’ remark mentioned was Mr Johnson’s now-infamous comment that he would ‘rather be dead in a ditch’ than return to Brussels and ask for another delay to Brexit. The politician has taken the ‘Foot in Mouth Award’ three times which is unprecedented. The prime minister was ‘honoured’ for his ‘I’d rather be dead in a ditch’ comment (Picture: Getty Images) President Trump was a runner-up in the awards, for claiming that he had met the ‘Prince of Whales’, while the phrase of the year used by ‘numerous politicians disingenuously’ was said to be ‘Get Brexit done’. Labour’s Jess Phillips was handed the Chrissie Maher Award for being the ‘direct, honest, plain-speaking politician’ the UK ‘needed’. Greta Thunberg was also honoured with the International Award for her ‘inspiring’ message’ that she gets across by ‘simply and clearly stating facts’. Others celebrated included satire campaign group Led By Donkeys, British journalist Ian Dunt and political activist Femi Oluwole. The Confused.com Plain English Campaign said: ‘There was extremely creditable competition from the other shortlisted candidates, Russell Brand and Donald Trump. ‘But just as Brexit apparently means Brexit, Boris is Boris, and that means regular and reliable gibberish. ‘If he isn’t crassly dismissing child abuse as a waste of money he’s being dishonest or at least incomprehensible about…pretty much everything. Donald Trump was a runner-up, called out for his ‘Prince of Whales’ mistake on Twitter (Picture: Getty Images) ‘Routine, flat-out lies are Boris’s bread and butter – but it’s the gaffes we’re especially interested in. ‘And on that score Boris never disappoints. ‘So it makes perfect sense to honour his routine clangers with this gold-standard gibberish gong.’ Plain English Campaign is an independent, self-funding pressure group based in New Mills, High Peak. The company works to persuade organisations in the UK and abroad to communicate with the public in plain language. Metro.co.uk has approached the Conservative Party for comment.
