Donald Trump has paid a surprise Thanksgiving visit to Afghanistan, where he served up turkey dinners to US troops (Picture: AP)Donald Trump has paid a surprise secret Thanksgiving Day trip to Afghanistan and revealed the US has reopened peace talks with the Taliban. The President of the United States made his first trip to the site of America’s longest war Thursday afternoon, and spent nearly three hours on the ground. Trump served up turkey dinners and talked with troops at Bagram Air Field before sitting down with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Revealing US talks with Taliban chiefs, Trump said: ‘We’re meeting with them. ‘And we’re saying it has to be a ceasefire. The president revealed fresh peace talks with the Taliban during the trip, and says he hopes to begin withdrawing troops from Afghanistan soon (Picture: AP)‘And they don’t want to do a ceasefire, but now they do want to do a ceasefire, I believe… and we’ll see what happens.’ Trump made the announcement two months after he abruptly broke off peace talks with the Taliban. That saw him cancel a secret meeting with Taliban and Afghan leaders at the Camp David presidential retreat after a particularly deadly spate of violence. It was capped by a bombing in Kabul that killed 12 people, including an American soldier. September’s cancellation ended almost a year of efforts by the US to reach a political settlement with the Taliban. Trump also sat down for a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during the surprise trip to Bagram Air Field (Picture: AP)Then-President George W Bush declared war on the Islamists in 2001 for protecting Al-Qaeda terrorists who launched the 9/11 attacks against the United States. Trump ran for President in 2016 vowing to end America’s ‘endless wars,’ and had previously pushed to withdraw the 12,000 US troops still stationed in Afghanistan. He has said it is unfair that US forces act as global ‘policemen’ and argued that other countries’ wars should be theirs to wage. Tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and more than 2,400 American service members have been killed since the war began 18 years ago. The Taliban still controls or holds sway over about half of the country, staging near-daily attacks targeting Afghan forces and government officials. Trump’s visit was shrouded in secrecy to keep him safe, with journalists who traveled with him ordered to hand over phones and tablets until they arrived (Picture: AFP)The US and Taliban had been close to an agreement in September that might have enabled a US troop withdrawal. Trump said he was proceeding with a plan to reduce US troop levels to about 8,600, telling reporters he is intent on ‘bringing down the number of troops substantially.’ But Trump added that the US will remain in Afghanistan ‘until we have a deal or we have total victory.’ The president’s trip was shrouded in secrecy after an amateur British plane-spotter saw Air Force One en route to Iraq last year. Security officials keep details of Presidential visits to war zones secret to try and guarantee the safety of the president and his aides. President Trump is pictured addressing troops during his surprise visit. He vowed not to withdraw from Afghanistan until the US had secured peace or a victory over the Taliban (Picture: AP)Phones and other communication devices were confiscated for the duration of the trip from everyone traveling aboard Air Force One. And Thanksgiving-themed tweets were teed up to publish ahead of time from Trump’s account to prevent suspicions arising about the president’s silence. A small group of reporters was told to meet Wednesday night on the top floor of a parking garage and transported in black vans to Andrews Air Force Base. Meanwhile, the president was secretly flying back from Florida, where reporters had been told he’d be spending Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago club. White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said plans for the visit had been in the works for weeks. She explained: ‘It’s a dangerous area and he wants to support the troops. Air Force One sits on the tarmac at Bargram Air Base. Trump’s secret visit to Iraq was blown by a British planespotter in 2018, with security officials taking extra precautions to keep the trip under wraps until the president arrived (Picture: AFP) ‘He and Mrs Trump recognize that there’s a lot of people who are away from their families during the holidays and we thought it’d be a nice surprise.’ First Lady Melania Trump did not join her husband for his trip to Afghanistan.
