There have been 252 mass shootings in the last year (Picture: Michael Nigro/Pacific Press/LightRocket/ Getty Images) It was a dark day in the US yesterday, as the country saw two mass shootings within the space of 15 hours. First, a gunman opened fire in a Texas Walmart (a supermarket chain) and killed 20 people, as well as injured 26 others. A few hours later, another perpetrator started shooting people in a bar in Ohio and left nine people dead. These are not the first incidents of this kind in the US this year; so far, the tally for mass shootings – in which three or more people are killed – stands at 252. The horrific events have urged people to call for stronger gun controls. Why are Americans allowed to carry guns? The right to buy and carry a gun has been a legal right for all Americans since 1787 – it was written into the constitution, which covers the country’s fundamental laws. These are generally split into two categories; federal law and state law. At what age can you buy a gun in America? Under federal law, which applies to all American states, a handgun or handgun ammunition cannot be sold to or in the possession of anyone younger than 18. However, there is no minimum age for possession of long guns or long gun ammunition. Gun control is controlled under federal and state law (Picture: Sanchit Khanna/Hindustan Times via Getty Images) Furthermore, licensed gun dealers can only sell handguns to people older than 21, while rifles and shotguns can legally be purchased when you are 18 years old. There are also certain exceptions, such as if the gun is required for ranching, farming, target practice or hunting. State law can sometimes overrule federal law. For instance, in Main, Alaska, Minnesota and New York, a 16-year-old can purchase a rifle, while in Vermont someone of the same age can also buy a handgun. In Minnesota, further exceptions are offered where a 14-year-old is allowed to purchase a rifle if they have parental consent. However, according to federal law, convicted criminals, non-US citizens and those who have a mental illness are not allowed to possess a gun. What is the US firearms industry worth? Figures fluctuate somewhat depending on your source, however, a report by IBIS World in 2018 outlined the revenue collected by retailers. Gun stores saw an annual revenue of just over £9billion, while manufacturers saw significantly more at £14billion. However, this does not account for all gun transactions (nor does it take into account black market trade). Meanwhile, in 2016, the industry as a whole was estimated at bringing in over £42billion to the country’s economy. This often follows protests from Americans after events such as last year’s high school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas school in Florida, where 17 people lost their lives. The Texas Walmart and Ohio bar shooting will likely cause the rift to widen between the two sides: those who believe having guns is an essential right, and those who want tighter laws in place. Only time will tell which side will win the argument.
