Campaigners are calling for tighter gun controls in the US (Picture: Rex; Getty; Reuters; EPA) Two mass shootings within the space of 15 hours has renewed calls for tighter gun control in the US. More people have been murdered with guns than have died in major wars, according to officials. The Texas Walmart shooting is now the deadliest of 2019 after the El Paso gun attack left 20 dead and 26 injured. The massacre was described by governor Greg Abbott as ‘one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas.’ Just hours later, at least seven were killed by a gunman who opened fire at a bar in Ohio. In the 215 days so far this year, the US has seen 252 mass shootings – an average of more than one a day. Campaigners want tighter gun laws across the US (Picture: Getty) A mass shooting is defined as one in which at least four or more were shot in a single spree. Of these, 127 were deadly. A total of 278 people have been killed this year so far and over 1,000 injured after a shooter has opened fire. President Donald Trump offered his ‘thoughts and prayers’ to those involved in the ‘hateful’ act at the Cielo Vista Mall Walmart. He added: ‘There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people.’ The attack, using an AK47-styled assault rifle, is the worst this year and the eighth deadliest in US history. On Saturday night, several hundred activists marched on the White House demanding tougher laws on guns. A twitter account linked to the Texas suspect had an image spelling out Trump with guns Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, said: ‘The NRA (National Rifle Association) want us to believe only good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns. ‘But when the bad guys have semiautomatic rifles, bulk ammo and a death wish, the only thing that will stop them are stronger gun laws.’ The US constitution lists it as a ‘basic right’ that an adult can own or carry a gun. The only reason that someone might not be allowed to have a gun would be if they are a convicted criminal, have a mental illness or are not a US citizen. The rules have been in place since 1791, although they vary between the 50 US states. A vigil is held for victims in Texas (Picture: AFP) The National Rifle Association (NRA) is the all-powerful guardian of Americans’ gun rights and holds a lot of power over Washington, particularly the ruling Republican party. In the aftermath of the Texas shooting, Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker said there needed to be leaders willing to stand up them. He said: ‘In this election, we have to have leaders who are willing to stand up and say, “I’m not going to let this issue be determined by what the interests of the corporate gun lobby are and the NRA”.’ ‘Because this is a uniquely American problem, a uniquely American problem that we have such mass slaughter in our communities like this, that happens regularly.’ He said gun control was ‘common sense’, adding: ‘If you have more Americans dying in the last 50 years to gun violence than all of our wars combined … that should raise alarms for everybody.’ In the UK, gun laws were overhauled after the Dunblane school massacre of 1996. Handguns were effectively banned except for in Northern Ireland, where personal protection is accepted as a legitimate reason to obtain and own a firearm.
