Curt James Brockway has blamed his actions on President Donald Trump (Picture: AP; MTN News; KTVQ) A convicted criminal who battered a 13-year-old boy for ‘disrespecting’ the national anthem has said he was acting on President Donald Trump’s orders. Curt James Brockway, 39, slammed Wally Crosby into the ground when he failed to take his hat off for The Star-Spangled Banner during a county fair and rodeo in Montana. The boy, who said he had not heard Brockway’s demands, was left with a fractured skull and bled from his ear for six hours after the assault. Brockway’s attorney Lance Jasper said Trump’s rhetoric of ‘respecting the flag’ would be used as part of his defence in a court hearing scheduled for August 14. He said: ‘His commander-in-chief is telling people that if they kneel, they should be fired, or if they burn a flag, they should be punished.’ He was convicted of assault with a weapon in 2011 (Picture: AP) Wally Crosby’s ear bled for six hours after the incident (Picture: KTVQ) The boy had not known Brockway was speaking to him (Picture: KTVQ) Brockway, who was convicted of assault with a weapon in 2011, was previously in the army before being honourably discharged due to a brain injury. The injury left him with damage to his frontal lobe, which Mr Jasper said would also be used as part of the defence. Danny Dyer calls Boris Johnson ‘a f***ing alien’ as he gives his verdict on new PM He told The Missoulian: ‘Obviously [Brockway] owes a big portion of accountability for what took place, but it’s certain that there was other things at work here that definitely contributed. ‘Trump never necessarily says go hurt somebody, but the message is absolutely clear. ‘I am certain of the fact that [Brockway] was doing what he believed he was told to do, essentially, by the president.’ Brockway will attend a court hearing on August 14 (Picture: KTVQ) The incident took place at a county fair and rodeo (Picture: Mineral County Fair/Facebook) Brockway’s victim was rushed to the Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital by helicopter after the incident on August 3. The boy has since been released from hospital and is now recovering. His mother, Megan Keeler, said Brockway grabbed her son by his neck and thrown him ‘to the ground head first’. She added that Wally is ‘deathly afraid of strangers’ and ‘doesn’t remember anything’ of the attack. Ms Keeler told the Missoula Current: ‘All the witnesses I have talked to said this was completely random. There was no exchange – nothing! He targeted Wally and took him down.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk? If you have a story for our news team, email us at webnews@metro.co.uk. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
