Donald Trump has been branded ‘deeply irresponsible’ for retweeting a conspiracy theory suggesting without any evidence that Bill and Hillary Clinton were involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s death. Epstein, 66, a billionaire financier, was facing a 45-year jail term for allegedly sex trafficking underage girls at his properties. Yesterday morning the former associate of the US president was found unresponsive in his prison cell after taking his own life at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. The US justice department and FBI have said they will investigate the death but a number of unproven conspiracy theories have emerged on social media in the meantime. One implies the Clintons were involved amid claims that former president Bill Clinton took trips to Epstein’s Caribbean Island, Little St James. Mr Clinton denies visiting Little St James. How does that happen. ‘Jeffery Epstein had information on Bill Clinton & now he’s dead.’ Trump’s decision to re-tweet the unsubstantiated claim was heavily criticised on Twitter. One person said: ‘This is so deeply reckless and irresponsible it beggars belief.’ The Clinton conspiracy theory was just one of many circulating on the internet, with theories around Mr Trump’s involvement also among them. This is one of the nuttiest things Trump has done on Twitter and in itself proves he’s completely unfit to serve. pic.twitter.com/0H8zIQ3Epd — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 10, 2019 Talk show host John Ziegler said: ‘I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the current president of the United States broadcasting to 60 million people a unknown comedian’s conspiracy theory that a former POTUS had a sex abuser killed, in a federal prison under the control of the current president. ‘I just can’t.’ Both Mr Clinton and Mr Trump have denied knowing anything about Epstein’s alleged scheme. Mr Trump admits he used to be an acquaintance of Epstein, but said he fell out with him more than 15 years ago. A spokesman for Mr Clinton, Angel Urena, said previously the former president ‘knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago, or those with which he has been recently charged in New York’. Prosecutors in the US have confirmed their investigation into the sex trafficking allegations against Epstein will continue. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
