Donald Trump made no mention of a crackdown on the sale of assault weapons in the wake of Saturday’s shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that killed a total of 20 people (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has delivered a lengthy speech on two weekend gun massacres that killed 29 people – but ignored calls to ban the sale of assault weapons. Speaking at the White House Monday, the President of the United States hit out at video games and social media companies for encouraging ‘a culture that celebrates violence.’ He also outlined plans for an early-warning system designed to flag up and monitor potential mass shooters before they strike. But President Trump made no mention of cracking down on the sale of the powerful assault rifle-type guns used by both shooters in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, despite pressure from many – including his favorite newspaper, the New York Post, to do so. Referring to suspected Walmart shooter Patrick Crusius, 21, who killed 20 shoppers in El Paso after allegedly posting an anti-immigration manifesto online, Trump said: ‘The shooter in El Paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. A chilling surveillance camera grab shows suspected El Paso shooter Patrick Crusius walk into the supermarket carrying an assault rifle (Picture: El Paso PD) ‘In one voice our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. ‘These sinister ideologies must be defeated. ‘Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul.’ Trump continued: ‘We must recognize that the internet has provided a dangerous avenue to radicalized disturbed minds and perform demented acts. ‘We must shine lights on the dark recesses of the internet and stop mass murders before they happen. Mourners embrace one another at a makeshift memorial outside Walmart in El Paso, Texas, after Saturday’s mass shooting that killed 20 (Picture: AFP) ‘The perils of the internet and social media cannot be ignored and they will not be ignored.’ Trump said he had ordered the US Department of Justice and social media companies to ‘develop mass tools to identify mass shooters before they strike.’ Hitting out at video games, he continued: ‘We must stop the glorification of violence in society. this includes the gory and grisly video games that are now commonplace ‘It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence…we must stop or substantially reduce this.’ Trump went on to promise reformed mental health laws offering ‘treatment’ to disturbed individuals – and ‘involuntary confinement’ when necessary. Trump ignored a call from his own favorite newspaper – the New York Post- to completely ban the sale of assault rifles (Picture: Mega) He also unveiled plans for a new law guaranteeing the death penalty for ‘those who commit hate crimes and mass murders.’ Trump, who mixed up Dayton, Ohio, with Toledo, another city in the state, during his address said: ‘This capital punishment be delivered quickly, decisively and without years of serious delay.’ The president also referenced the 1999 Columbine High School massacre – the US’s first mass-shooting, that saw shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold kill 12 students at a teacher at the Colorado school before turning their weapons on themselves. Trump said: ‘In the two decades since Columbine our nation has watched with rising horror and dread as one mass shooting has followed another. ‘We cannot allow ourselves to feel powerless. We can and will stop this contagion.’ Saturday’s other shooting saw gunman Connor Betts, 24, kill nine people – including his 22 year-old sister Megan – in Dayton after targeting the city’s nightlife district. Police responded to the scene within one minute and shot Betts dead. Crusius was arrested after the El Paso shooting, and faces capital murder charges meaning he could be put to death even before any new law demanded by President Trump is passed.
