Donald Trump has tweeted suggesting both mass shootings such as those carried out Saturday could be prevented by ‘immigration reform’ – despite both shooters being white Americans (Pictures: AP) Donald Trump has suggested that a tougher stance on immigration could have prevented Saturday’s racist mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso. The President of the United States tweeted Monday: ‘We cannot let those killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. ‘Likewise for those so seriously wounded. We can never forget them, and those many who came before them. ‘Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. ‘We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!’ Trump sent this tweet claiming ‘background checks’ and ‘desperately needed immigration reform’ could be the key to preventing future mass-shootings Walmart shooting suspect Patrick Crusius, 21, shared a manifesto 90 minutes before the gun rampage that killed 20 hitting out at an ‘invasion’ of Latino immigrants to the US. Crusius, who is a white US citizen, is said to have targeted Hispanic victims during the rampage on Saturday afternoon, which police are investigating as a hate crime. He faces charges of capital murder, and could be executed if convicted. The weekend’s other mass-shooting in Dayton, Ohio, saw another white American, Connor Betts, 24, kill nine people before being shot dead by police. Betts’ 22 year-old sister Megan was among the victims. The mass-murderer opened fire outside a bar called Ned Peppers, in Dayton’s Oregon District, and managed to kill eight people before being shot by police around one minute later. He is said to have described himself as a ‘metalhead leftist’ online. Both horrific tragedies have prompted fresh calls for a ban on the sale of assault weapons. President Trump banned the sale of bump stocks – which convert semi-automatic weapons into machine-gun like automatic guns – in the wake of the February 2018 Parkland school massacre in Florida. He has not made any firm commitments to further gun control measures in the wake of Saturday’s shootings.
