Donald Trump has been warned that Greenland is not up for grabs (Picture: Getty) US President Donald Trump has been warned Greenland is not for sale after he discussed buying the Arctic island with aides. Trump is said to be interested in buying the world’s largest island because of its huge natural resources and geopolitical importance. The US already has an air base on the northwest coast of the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump discussed the idea of buying Greenland during a dinner with associates, when it was claimed Denmark is struggling to pay for the £420m subsidy it sends to Greenland each year. Trump asked: ‘What do you guys think about that? ‘Do you think it would work?’ Donald Trump has been repeatedly asking aides whether he should buy Greenland, according to reports (Picture AFP/Getty Images) A Republican congressional aide said Trump had brought up the subject with lawmakers many times but they are not taking his comments seriously. The White House is yet to officially comment on the story. However, Greenland’s government has dismissed suggestions it was up for sale on its website. In a statement they said: ‘We have a good cooperation with USA, and we see it as an expression of greater interest in investing in our country and the possibilities we offer. ‘Of course, Greenland is not for sale.’ Greenland, which has 55,000 residents, is an autonomous territory of Denmark (Picture: AFP/Getty) Former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen tweeted: ‘It must be an April Fool’s Day joke…but totally out of [season]!’ Greenland, which has 55,000 residents, has been partially owned by Denmark since the 18th century, before becoming part of the country in 1953. It wouldn’t be the first time an American leader tried to buy Greenland, reported the Independent. In 1946, President Harry Truman proposed to pay Denmark $100 million (around £82,300,000) to buy Greenland after flirting with the idea of swapping land in Alaska for strategic parts of the Arctic island. Trump is set to visit Denmark next month. It must be an April Fool’s Day joke … but totally out of sesson! https://t.co/ev5DDVZc5f — Lars Løkke Rasmussen (@larsloekke) August 15, 2019 Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
