Nancy Pelosi called Donald Trump’s Twitter comments racist ahead of a vote to rebuke the US President in the House of Representatives (Picture: Getty) The US House of Representatives voted to condemn Donald Trump’s racist tweets against four congresswomen. The move came amid chaotic scenes although is largely a symbolic measure aimed at shaming Trump and the Republicans who have stood by him. As soon as the vote was over a Democrat politician tried to bring forward efforts to impeach the president but they stalled. The vote to condemn Trump was split 240-187, mainly along party lines. Four Republicans and an independent voted with the Democrats. {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T2M5S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2019\/07\/17\/07\/16150876-0-image-a-91_1563346220136.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2019-07-17T07:45:45+0100”,“description”:“Nancy Pelosi slaps back over removing comments on Trump’s ‘racist’ tweet, before walking out of the House.”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2019\/07\/17\/92653284518808808\/1024x576_MP4_92653284518808808.mp4”,“height”:576,“width”:1024} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It was the culmination of three days of outrage sparked by Trump’s tweetstorm that has had little impact on his overall approval rating. On Sunday, Trump told a group of four minority Democratic congresswomen to ‘go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.’ Three of the four were born in the US and the other is a naturalised US citizen. Trump doubled down his attack on Monday but is still claiming he has not got ‘a racist bone in my body.’ All four women – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan – were inside the House of Representatives on Tuesday night to listen to the vote. The four women have also clashed with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, on how assertive the chamber should be against Trump and his immigration policies. She took to the floor and said: ‘These comments from the White House are disgraceful and disgusting and these comments are racist. ‘Every single member of this institution, Democratic and Republican, should join us in condemning the president’s racist tweets.’ Republicans formally objected and the House was brought to a standstill for over 90 minutes while they debated whether Ms Pelosi’s words should be struck from the official record. The Democratically-controlled chamber sided with a defiant Ms Pelosi and allowed her use of the word racist to formally stand. But that was not before Republican Emanuel Cleaver II, who was presiding over the House, banged down his gavel and walked out saying politicians needed to be more civil toward each other. US Speaker Nancy Pelosi took to the floor of the House to condemn Donald Trump’s tweets as racist (Picture: C-Span) After that, politicians voted on the motion and agreed that the House ‘strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of colour.’ It said Trump’s slights ‘do not belong in congress or in the United States of America.’ The resolution included a full page of remarks by President Ronald Reagan, who is revered by Republicans. Mr Reagan said in 1989 that if the US shut its doors to newcomers, ‘our leadership in the world would soon be lost’. The rebuke is embarrassing for Trump but he appears unapologetic. After the vote, he again took to Twitter saying he was pleased at how ‘unified’ the Republican party were. ‘Quite a day!’ he wrote and noted the procedural rebuke against Ms Pelosi. He added: ‘If you really want to see statements, look at the horrible things they said about our Country, Israel and much more.’ The vote carries no legal repercussions for Trump and its highly partisan nature suggests it will not cost him any support with his die-hard conservative base.
