Sir Kim Darroch, right, warns that Trump could be ‘indebted to dodgy Russians’ Britain’s ambassador to the US has given a scathing assessment of the White House, describing Donald Trump as ‘chaotic, incompetent and insecure’. Sir Kim Darroch also goes to on to predict that the Presidency could ‘crash and burn’ and that we could be at the beginning of a downward spiral that leads to ‘disgrace and downfall’, in a leaked diplomatic memo. Highlighting his concerns over ‘vicious infighting’ in the White House, Sir Kim questions whether the administration ‘will ever look competent’. The memos, detailing Sir Kim’s assessments of the Trump administration from 2017 to the present, could prove embarrassing for the Foreign Office. However, officials insist that the relationship with the White House can withstand the ‘mischievous behaviour’ of the leak and defended Sir Kim’s candid style. President Donald Trump is described as ‘inept’ by the ambassador (Picture: AP) The leaked memos, obtained by the Mail on Sunday, claim that in order to communicate with the President, ‘you need to make your points simple, even blunt’. Sir Kim claims that despite the President being ‘dazzled’ by the pomp and ceremony during his recent state visit to the UK, the Trump administration would remain self-interested and ‘this is still the land of America First’. He also slams Trump’s ‘incoherent and chaotic policy on Iran’, and questions his publicly stated reason for calling off a retaliatory airstrike against Tehran following the downing of a US drone. The US and Iran have been on the verge of an armed conflict over tensions in the Gulf, and Mr Trump stated that he called off a planned airstrike with just minutes to spare, because of the potentially high number of casualties. However, Sir Kim says the explanation does not stand up to scrutiny and suggested it had more to do with Trump’s focus on the 2020 re-election campaign and his previous promises not to involve the US in foreign conflicts. The Foreign Office says Sir Kim’s views are not necessarily the views of ministers or the government (Picture: PA) ‘It’s more likely that he was never fully on board and that he was worried about how this apparent reversal of his 2016 campaign promises would look come 2020,’ Sir Kim said. He claims it is ‘unlikely that US policy on Iran is going to become more coherent any time soon’ as ‘this is a divided administration’. On allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, the memo says ‘the worst cannot be ruled out’. This comes despite an investigation by Robert Mueller published earlier this year that cleared the Trump team of the collusion claims. Sir Kim says the Trump presidency will remain self-interested (Picture: AFP) In reference to Trump’s ability to shrug off controversies, Sir Kim says the President may nonetheless ‘emerge from the flames, battered but intact, like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the final scenes of the Terminator’. A Foreign Office spokesman said: ‘The British public would expect our ambassadors to provide ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country. ‘Their views are not necessarily the views of ministers or indeed the government. ‘But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities. ‘Our team in Washington have strong relations with the White House and no doubt… these will withstand such mischievous behaviour.’ Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
