Iranian boats attempted to seize a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz (Picture: AP; Shutterstock; Royal Navy) Three armed Iranian boats attempted to seize a British oil tanker as it passed through waters in the Gulf. The Royal Navy was forced to intervene and issue a warning to the vessels and ordered them to withdraw. The incident is a major escalation of tensions in the area and came hours after a warning by Iran’s President to the UK that it would seize a tanker. Armed vessels from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard reportedly tried to capture the British Heritage tanker as it sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. The Iranians ordered the BP-owned British Heritage to change course and stop in Tehran’s nearby waters. Officials from Washington said HMS Montrose – which was escorting the tanker – trained its guns on the boats and successfully warned them to back off. In a statement issued on Thursday morning, the UK government said they were ‘concerned’ by the incident and urged Iranian authorities ‘to de-escalate the situation in the region.’ They made no reference to training guns on the Iranians, saying that they received a verbal warning from the Royal Navy. It is in the region performing what the government has called a ‘maritime security role.’ HMS Montrose is based in Bahrain and is in the region for ‘maritime security’ (Picture: Ministry of Defence) The move by Iran came after the President Hassan Rouhani warned Britain of unspecified ‘consequences’ after one of its oil tankers was detained off Gibraltar. The Grace 1 tanker was stopped last week by police and customs officers in Gibraltar – a British overseas territory on Spain’s southern tip – with the aid of a detachment of British Royal Marines. Iran condemned the detention as an ‘illegal interception,’ but Gibraltar officials said that the cargo was believed to be destined for Syria, which is subject to European sanctions. They said up to two million barrels of oil was destined for the war-ravaged country although Iran claims the boat was headed ‘somewhere else.’ The tanker is still being held in Gibraltar. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani warned the UK would face consequences (Picture: AP) Rouhani took to state TV in Iran and said: ‘You [Britain] are the initiator of insecurity and you will realise the consequences later. ‘Now you are so hopeless that, when one of your tankers wants to move in the region, you have to bring your frigates [to escort it] because you are scared. ‘Then why do you commit such acts? You should instead allow navigation to be safe.’ The incident comes amid a backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East, notably between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump first pulled out of a 2015 deal agreed between Tehran and world powers under which Iran curbed its nuclear programme. He then imposed crippling economic sanctions and ordered all countries to halt the purchase of Iranian oil. That has now effectively starved the Iranian economy of the main source of revenue that Tehran uses to import food for its 81 million population. That has left Iran with no benefits to show for agreeing to the nuclear arrangement, which is now under threat. The British Heritage tanker was trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz (Picture: Shutterstock) Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday night to warn of fresh sanctions, first imposed because of questions about how the Revolutionary Guard is funded. The US is also pushing its allies to step up security in the Strait of Hormuz and safeguard the strategic waters off Iran and Yemen. It claims that Tehran is behind attacks on six oil tankers in the area in recent weeks. It also shot down a US surveillance drone last month.
