Boris Johnson is the UK’s new Prime Minister. Just like Donald Trump, another morally-dubious man has been handed the power and attention his privileged upbringing taught him he deserved. Why do men like this keep winning elections? We all know social media was a fundamental defibrillator in the resurrection of the far-right, but it is not the only cause. There is another popular cultural form that deserves censure: the critically acclaimed TV drama. The golden age of television killed democracy. ‘If Boris Johnson was a character on a TV show, then I’d probably like him,’ a friend told me yesterday. He compared Johnson and Trump with Don Draper from Mad Men, Tony Soprano from The Sopranos and Walter White from Breaking Bad: popular characters from prestige television who don’t ‘play by the rules’ and who ‘get results’ – but don’t care about their methods. We love to watch the successful machinations of amoral men, and for many of us that extends to politics. Trump and Johnson, Soprano and Draper – they are all men who often tell lies. They are men who enjoy life unburdened by shame and guilt: they do want they want and they want what they do. They are – for many people – aspirational figures. You could argue that the shows supporting this idea (also Breaking Bad, despite Walter White’s unaspirational libido) finished years ago, and that such characters wouldn’t be written in this post-#MeToo era, but that isn’t true. Look at this year’s Emmy nominations and you’ll see numerous shows with charming, but amoral, leads. Yes, in Killing Eve the anti-heroes are women and in Barry the lead suffers from PTSD, but these characters are unrepentant killers with whom we empathise. The golden age of television loves narratives that reveal the humanity of someone who is initially off-putting (Picture: BBC/ Getty) In comedies such as Fleabag, The Good Place, Russian Doll and Veep, we see female leads who are self-involved, hedonistic and lack compassion, but – other than in Veep – they become ‘better’ people, much like Soprano, Draper and Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman. The golden age of television loves narratives that reveal the humanity of someone who is initially off-putting. See Steve in Stranger Things and Eleanor Shellstrop in The Good Place – despite their faults, these characters are charming and funny, we laugh with them and at them. Johnson is the same. He is rich but has ill-fitting clothes and unkempt hair. This is so obviously a choice that it becomes difficult to see it as sinister. We know he knows we know he’s performing a character. He’s enjoying himself, we’re laughing together. He’s a rascal, and that’s why people like him. If we can watch Game Of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen massacre a city, Barry murder a friendly police officer and Villanelle and Eve both commit ultra-violence while still rooting for them, then it’s easy to understand why we’re happy to be lied to and misled by politicians. A lie is less ‘bad’ than a murder, and the anti-heroes we enjoy spending our free time with are very prone to violence. Politics is seen as entertainment, and that’s why big characters have risen to positions of power. Characters who are fundamentally flawed are characters we most like to watch. Trump and Johnson are – by many markers – terrible people, and so too are the money launderers of Ozark, the vampires of True Blood, the stick-up men of The Wire and the warring households of Big Little Lies. Knowing that we wouldn’t want to hang out with these characters doesn’t stop us from gulping down their stories, so it follows that some of us must inevitably vote for pompous, absurd, but undeniably characterful politicians. The best way for progressive politics to lure voters back is to play the right wing at their own game. You can cheat on your partner, smoke cigarettes, dabble in drugs and make poor taste jokes, but also believe in the importance of the welfare state. We don’t need saints on the left, we need men and women who are morally ambiguous when it doesn’t matter, but possess moral certitude when it does. Season Two of Killing Eve begins with Villanelle receiving treatment in a public hospital. Maybe that charming, amoral assassin is the flawed defender of socialism the world desperately needs.
