TV grabs showing North Korea missile launch as leader Kim Jong Un addresses the media (Picture: AP) North Korea has fired two short-range missiles into the sea in a shocking warning to the US. The rogue state launched its first weapons test since Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un met at the demilitarised zone last month and pledged to start nuclear negotiations. Experts suggest the North is angry with planned US-South Korea military drills and the failure to progress talks with Washington. South Korea’s military said the missiles were propelled from near the eastern town of Wonsan and landed in the Sea of Japan. One travelled 270 miles, while the other flew 430 miles after being fired from mobile launchers. Images from the hermit kingdom showed people watching the launches on TV and listening to Kim Jong Un. Images of the shock missile launch were shown BY state media (Picture: AP) Talks have stalled between Washington and Pyongyang, despite the public display of friendship between Trump and Kim. The US administration has so far not commented on the shock launch. Japan’s Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya said: ‘If they were ballistic missiles, they violate the UN resolutions, and I find it extremely regrettable.’ The North is also fuming over planned summer US-South Korea military drills which they claim are preparation for an invasion. Harry Kazianis, of Washington’s Center for the National Interest, said: ‘North Korea is clearly upset that the US and South Korea are conducting joint military exercises. ‘We should not be shocked by this move and, in fact, we should have seen it coming.’ {“@context”:“https:\/\/schema.org”,“@type”:“VideoObject”,“name”:“Metro.co.uk”,“duration”:“T2M31S”,“thumbnailUrl”:“https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2019\/06\/30\/08\/15436792-0-image-a-1_1561880632596.jpg”,“uploadDate”:“2019-06-30T08:45:15+0100”,“description”:“The move echoes the previous meeting with the South Korean President Moon Jae-in”,“contentUrl”:“https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2019\/06\/30\/4529252761200735879\/640x360_MP4_4529252761200735879.mp4”,“height”:360,“width”:640} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The North wants America to lift crippling economic sanctions in return for stopping its weapons programme. Some experts say North Korea is trying to get an upper hand by flashing its military muscle ahead of a possible resumption of talks with the US. Despite its economic woes, the hermit kingdom is thought to have around 200 medium and short-range missile launchers around the country and around four nuclear warheads. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
