Donald Trump hit back at US ambassador Sir Kim Darroch after the leaked emails called him ‘inept’ (Picture: Getty/PA) Donald Trump said Britain’s ambassador to the US ‘has not served the UK well’ after he called the president ‘inept’ and ‘insecure’. In memos leaked to the Mail on Sunday, ambassador Sir Kim Darroch also described Mr Trump as ‘incompetent’ and said the White House had become ‘uniquely dysfunctional’ under his service. The president hit back at the emails as the Foreign Office launched an investigation into the source of the leak. In one memo, Sir Darroch questioned if the Trump administration ‘will ever look competent’ and expressed concerns over ‘vicious infighting and chaos’ in the White House. Mr Trump told reporters in New Jersey: ‘We’re not big fans of that man and he has not served the UK well. ‘So I can understand it and I can say things about him but I won’t bother.’ Trade secretary Liam Fox told the BBC the leak was ‘unprofessional, unethical and unpatriotic’. He said that whoever released the emails had ‘maliciously’ undermined the defence and security relationship with the US, ‘the most important global relationship that we have’. While defence minister Tobias Ellwood suggested the leaker put ‘self-interest above country’. In the emails, the UK ambassador to Washington said: ‘We don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction-riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.’ The chairman of the foreign affairs committee, Tom Tugendhat, called the leak of diplomatic cables ‘deeply damaging’ and said police should be involved in the investigation. He said the leak had ‘all the hallmarks of a senior politician’ and said it ‘makes the betrayal all the more serious’. He added: ‘How can officials give honest advice to politicians if it is stored and leaked for petty point-scoring? ‘This is deeply damaging to the integrity of the UK and must be investigated by the police immediately.’ The documents obtained by the Mail on Sunday detail Sir Kim’s assessments of the Trump administration from 2017 to the present.
