The President of the United States went on the defensive Tuesday, insisting residents of the Maryland city have been calling the White House to thank him. Speaking to reporters outside the Washington DC address, Trump claimed Baltimore dwellers were thrilled at him drawing attention to the ‘filthy dirty’ city, which he also branded ‘so horrible.’ Trump added: ‘Those people are living in hell in Baltimore. ‘They’re largely African-American … and they really appreciate what I’m doing, and they let me know it.’ President Trump has spent much of the last week embroiled in a war of words with Baltimore Congressman Elijah Cummings, pictured last month (Picture: AP) He wet on to claim that Baltimore’s cash had been ‘stolen and wasted by people like (Baltimore Congressman and Trump critic) Elijah Cummings.’ Trump made the ‘least racist person’ defense after insisting his repeated counter-attacks on Cummings were not because of the color of his skin, according to MailOnline. Donald Trump says he’s ‘the least racist person there is anywhere in the world’ The president also turned his fire on civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton, saying: ‘Now he’s a racist. He’s a racist!’ Trump began attacking Baltimore over the weekend by branding the city, on America’s east coast, a ‘disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess.’ Critics said that the remarks he used to describe the deprived, majority-black city were inflammatory and racist. Earlier this month, Trump sparked fury after telling four non-white US Congresswomen to ‘go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.’ That jibe, aimed at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley, saw the president accused of paraphrasing a notorious racist slur.
