More than £7,000 have been crowdfunded for the blimp of Boris Johnson (Picture: PA) A blimp of Tory leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson has taken to the skies of central London at the start of an anti-Brexit protest. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Donald Trump blimp that has previously flown over the city, the giant caricature of the former foreign secretary depicts him as a tousle-haired toddler. He is clad in a white t-shirt bearing his empty promise of an extra £350m a week for the NHS once the country leaves the EU. March for Change, the group behind the mass Park Lane protest, managed to crowdfund £7,000 for the blimp saying: ‘We all know Boris Johnson’s infamous promise of £350 million a week for the NHS was just a load of hot air. Mr Johnson is widely thought to be the one who will succeed Theresa May (Picture: REX) The blimp bears a striking resemblance to that caricaturing Donald Trump (Picture: AP) ‘And yet he’s about to float into the most powerful position in the land, based on nothing more than his over-inflated ego.’ Mr Johnson is largely expected to win the leadership contest, beating current Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The results will be announced on Tuesday and the new Prime Minister handed the keys to Downing Street the following day. Both Johnson and Hunt have said they are prepared to crash out of the EU without a deal despite warnings of a recession and trading chaos. Johnson refused to rule out suspending parliament to force through a no-deal but was blocked by politicians in a vote last week. Campaigners, who believe the only way to tackle pressing global issues is by retaining an EU membership, say they are protesting to stop a ‘hard Brexit PM being imposed on the country and hurtling us towards the cliff edge.’ March for Change campaigners said they don’t want a ‘hard Brexit PM’ (Picture: REX) Tom Brufatto, chair of Britain for Europe said: ‘The Boris Blimp might seem a bit of lighthearted fun but it carries a serious message. ‘We will not allow Boris Johnson to float into Number 10 on a favourable tailwind, or have the summer off, unopposed, after so much hot air on Brexit, with so much at stake. ‘We’d urge everyone who’s disgusted by Boris Johnson’s views on women, ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ+ communities, tax cuts for the rich to join us in London on Saturday, to send him that message, loud and clear. ‘His utter contempt for British democracy, signalled by his willingness to shut down Parliament, must be challenged as he’s about to receive the keys to Number 10.’ Conservative members are expected to cast their votes via postal ballot for their next leader at 5pm on Monday before the winner is announced the next day. The new PM will take office as soon as Mrs May leaves on Wednesday. Got a story for Metro.co.uk? If you have a story for our news team, email us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
