The tree is reported to have died during quarantine (Picture: Getty) The oak tree planted by Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron as a symbol to the deep ties between their two countries has died, according to reports. French President Macron gave the young oak to President Trump during a state visit to Washington DC in April last year. Photos were published of them planting the tree with gold shovels while their wives watched. The tree was brought from the site where American forces suffered nearly 10,000 casualties in June 1918, including some 1,800 killed. Mr Macron had said at the time that the tree and its poignant origins would be ‘a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us.’ US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participate in the tree planting ceremony with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron on the South Lawn of the White House (Picture: AFP) President Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron shake hands after planting the tree (Picture: Bloomberg via Getty Images) However, only a few days later the tree was pulled from the ground and taken away. Like all living organisms imported into the US, the tree had to go through quarantine. The French ambassador to the US at the time, Gerard Araud, promised on Twitter that it would be replanted. President Trump and President Macron have had a number of disagreements between them (Picture: AFP) However, AFP has reported a diplomatic source as saying the tree died during quarantine. The death comes after months of worsening relations between the two presidents. President Macron and Trump have had a number of disagreements between them on issues including trade, the environment and the Iran nuclear deal. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
