Pictures that allgedly show members of the Iranian Navy removing a limpet bomb from the Oil tanker in the Gulf (Picture: EPA) Close up pictures taken from a Navy helicopter are ‘proof’ of Iran’s involvement in last week’s tanker blasts in the Gulf of Oman, the Pentagon claims. The newly released colour pictures purport to show Iranian Revolutionary Guard members in an armed patrol boat removing an unexploded limpet mine from the Kokuka Courageous, one of the tankers hit by an explosion. Washington claims the Iranians left behind a handprint and fragments of the mine, releasing pictures that also show a hole in the side of the ship. The images are much clearer than the initial grainy black-and-white footage which the Pentagon released last week. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is making efforts to reach out to European and Asian leaders to convince them of Iranian involvement in the attacks, after Germany cast doubts over the claims. Iran has denied involvement, however the explosions have resulted in an exchange of angry rhetoric, with Iran reportedly on the verge of breaching its nuclear commitments. It comes as Trump ordered another 1,000 troops to be deployed in the region for ‘defensive purposes to address air, naval and ground-based threats in the Middle East’, acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan said. Shanahan insisted the United States did not ‘seek conflict with Iran’, but said the deployment was ‘to protect our national interests’. Iran had announced yesterday that it was close to breaking limits on Uranium enrichment, which the country had accepted under the nuclear deal which Trump quit last year.
