But it seems French President Emmanuel Macron has once again taken that advice a bit too literally, after his greeting left a thumbprint on Donald Trump’s hand. The world leaders came face-to-face during the D-Day commemorations in Normandy, France, which took place on June 6. They sat down together in Caen and shared a handshake across the table, with a white mark visible on Trump’s hand as he pulled away. Trump and Macron have forged a close relationship since the French leader’s election, and greeted each other warmly during a visit to a US war cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. Over 2,500 US soldiers lost their lives on June 6, 1944. He said: ‘We know what we owe to you veterans – our freedom. On behalf of my nation, I just want to say, thank you.’ Trump hugged Macron after his speech, and later praised the ‘outstanding’ relationship between their nations. He said: ‘We’re doing a lot together and the relationship between you and I and also the United States and France has been outstanding.’ The pair talked of their ‘outstanding’ relationship at the D-Day commemorations (Picture: AFP) Macron expressed France’s gratitude for the Allied invasion (Picture: AFP/ Getty Images) The pair met for bilateral talks (Picture: EPA) The pair then met in Caen for bilateral talks, which were said to last two hours, covering topics such as world trade, climate change and Iran. Macron has become known for his awkward handshakes with Trump, once holding the billionaire’s hand for a full 25 seconds during Bastille Day celebrations in 2017. The following year, he left another white thumbprint on the US President as the pair posed for photos in Paris. In April, Trump looked slightly out of his depth when the French leader unexpectedly went in for a kiss on both cheeks. Got a story for Metro.co.uk?
