Donald Trump hasn’t even realised just how restrictive the new laws on abortion are (Picture: Twitter/Getty) Donald Trump has indicated he backs abortion in cases of rape and incest in contradiction to Alabama’s restrictive new law. The US President has been mostly silent on the issue since the Republican state signed a bill outlawing abortion in almost all cases on Wednesday. The draconian measures, which have been criticised as being a ‘war on women’, only allows a woman to have a termination if their life is endangered by the pregnancy. In a series of late-night tweets, Trump said: ‘As most people know, and for those who would like to know, I am strongly Pro-Life, with the three exceptions – Rape, Incest and protecting the Life of the mother – the same position taken by Ronald Reagan.’ Under the new law in Alabama, abortion in cases of incest and rape remain illegal. Although he says he agrees with abortion in cases of rape and incest, the new laws make it illegal (Picture: realDonaldTrump/Twitter) Despite this, Trump praised the restrictive law change saying it signalled a victory for Republicans since he came to power. ‘We have come very far in the last two years with 105 wonderful new Federal Judges (many more to come), two great new Supreme Court Justices, the Mexico City Policy, and a whole new & positive attitude about the Right to Life,’ he said. ‘The Radical Left, with late term abortion (and worse), is imploding on this issue.’ Democrats have argued abortion is a big issue for the 2020 presidential election Trump appeared to confirm this theory and added: ‘We must stick together and Win for Life in 2020. If we are foolish and do not stay UNITED as one, all of our hard fought gains for Life can, and will, rapidly disappear!’ Under the law the woman or doctor who performs the abortion could face a jail sentence of up to 99 years (Picture: Splash) The near-blanket ban on abortions in Alabama enraged women’s rights campaigners who pointed out the 25 senators who passed the bill are all men. Under the law, any doctor who performs an abortion on a woman could face a jail sentence of up to 99 years as they could be charged with a class A felony. Anyone found attempting to carry out an abortion would face a class B felony. In comparison, the maximum sentence for rape in Alabama is just 10 years. Lily Allen accuses music industry of supporting her ‘abuser’ amid #MeToo movement Other Republican states across America have also introduced a so-called ‘heartbeat bill’ banning abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected at around six weeks. Reproductive rights activists and doctors say many women do not even know they are pregnant by this time, amounting to a near-total ban on abortions. On Tuesday, Georgia became the fourth state this year to pass on of these laws. Got a story for Metro.co.uk? If you have a story for our news team, email us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
