A UN report warns 10,000,000 people were facing ‘severe food shortages’ after the country had one of the worst harvests in a decade. Government officials blame the food crisis on bad weather and economic sanctions over the rogue state’s high-profile nuclear missile tests. The Korean Central News Agency said an average of 2.1 inches of rain fell in the hermit kingdom in the first five months of 2019. It said this is the lowest level of rain since 1982, when North Korea had an average of two inches of rain over the same period. In February, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, issued an unusual appeal for urgent food assistance. That same month at a summit in Vietnam in February, US President Donald Trump rejected North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s call for an easing of sanctions in return for dismantling his main nuclear complex – a partial step towards disarmament. North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper said officials and workers are attempting to find new water sources and mobilise pumps and irrigation equipment to minimise damage to agriculture. The country suffered a devastating famine in the mid-1990s which is estimated to have killed hundreds of thousands of people.
